Municipal Corporation Chandigarh manages
Municipal Solid Waste in all the 26 wards of
Chandigarh including urban & Rural slums,
colonies & all the villages.
On an average 450 TPD of Municipal Solid
Waste is generated in the city. The different
steps involved are Collection, Transportation,
processing & scientific management of
Collection of MSW is done by informal segment (Waste
Collectors/door to door collectors / rag pickers). There
are about 2,500 waste collectors operating at different
areas. They collect the segregated waste from all the
households and commercial establishment, in their
cycle carts and transport the same to Sehaj Safai
Kendras /collection centres. The garbage bins placed at
various sehaj safai kendras are then lifted and
transported to GPP by fast moving dumper placers.
Sweeping of road, berms, open areas & cleaning of road
gallies of Chandigarh is done by odd 3029
safaikaramcharies deployed at various sectors, colonies
& villages of Chandigarh. The waste so collected is
transported via cycle carts to SSKs / collection centres.
At the designated places, MC has constructed buildings called
SSKs have been provided with a boundary wall, segregation
platform, drinking water and toilet facilities, storage & a room
for waste collectors to take rest.
SSKs- 36 Nos. are operational.
The Municipal Solid Waste so collected at 493 bins (4.5 cubic
MT) located at various places in the city is transported with
the help of dumper placers of the Municipal Corporation
Chandigarh to the Garbage Processing Plant.
The horticulture waste generated in the city is transported
with the help of Tractor trolleys.

Live tracking of vehicles
• 102 municipal vehicles are being tracked by eSBM through GPS
• Real Time location of any vehicle can be checked at any moment of time
on web portal.
• Distance travelled, No of halts along with location name, working
hours etc. are being monitored continuously by the system.
• Bins located at various locations of the city are being monitored
daily with live status available on eSBM web portal.
• List of bins which are not cleaned at all or cleaned late can also be
located on web portal.
A MOU was signed between MCC and J.P.
Associates in 2005. The plant started
functioning in 2008.
This plant is located at Sector 38 West near
village Dadumajra having capacity of 500 TPD.
The end product is RDF, which is disposed off by
the plant authority at their own level. The inerts
(10 to 15 %) so produced are transported to
The bio-degradable/hotel waste are transported
to Bio-Methanation plant (5 MT) located near
motor garage, Industrial Area Phase1.
MCC has identified 17 bulk generators (more than 100 kg) which include school,
colleges, institutes, hotels and restaurants. They have advised as per the SWM
rules, 2016 for conducting on site composting.

Sanitary Landfill spread in an area of 45
acres. Out of 45 acres 25 acres has been
scientifically reclaimed. Capping and closing
is completed in 18 acres and the remaining 7
acres has been converted in sanitary landfill.
The sanitary landfill is maintained by
following SOP. Necessary EM solution, mud &
malwa is regularly spread to prevent
environmental pollution and fouls smell.

The southern area i.e. from Sector 31 to 63
including all villages and colonies have
been outsourced for mechanical sweeping,
manual sweeping, washing, cutting of
grass, pruning of trees etc and collection of
Manual sweeping is being carried out for V-
6 roads and mechanical sweeping for V1 to
Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has inaugurated the
concept of source segregation of waste on the occasion of
World Environment Day (5th June, 2017).
90000 Sets of bins (Green and Blue Colour) have been
distributed free of cost to the residents of Chandigarh.
The cycle carts of Door to door collectors are also being
repaired and modified by Municipal Corporation Chandigarh
for placement of 6 bins having 40 ltr. Capacity each.
For the quick and effective disposal of
complaints, a toll free No. 155304 has been
started. The complainant can lodge a
complaint by dialing above toll free nos, by
visiting MCC website (mcchandigarh.gov.in)
or by offline.
After resolving the complaint in a time frame
manner the complainant is informed through
SMS and requested to give the feedback.
All the 26 Wards of Chandigarh City has been declared “Open
Defecation Free Million plus city” on 30th September 2016.
Hon’ble Prime Minister has presented the certificate which
was received by Worthy Mayor and Commissioner Municipal
Corporation Chandigarh, during INDO-SAN 2016 which was
valid for a period of 6 months. After six months, Third Party
Inspection was carried out by QCI and Chandigarh has been
recertified as 100% Open Defecation Free on 7th June, 2017
for a further period of 6 months.
● The Municipal Corporation got the Swachh Survekshan Award
being the India’s Cleanest State Capital / Union Territory from
the Ministry of Urban Development, New Delhi.
● Chandigarh has been awarded ‘Green and clean city’ title. The award was
given by Hon’ble Union Minister Sh. Nitin Gadkari on the concluding day
of ‘Smart and sustainable summit’ at Nagpur on 8th April 2017.
