  2. 2. What type of waves do you know? Think of all the different types of waves you know and write them down. You have 2 minutes! Ocean wave X Ray Wave Ultra violet Microwave Sound Wave Gamma Radio wave Light wave Friendly wave! Mexican Wave Infrared There are many different types of waves...did you think of any more?
  3. 3. What is the electromagnetic spectrum? The electromagnetic spectrum covers all types of electromagnetic radiation. The squiggly line next to it is what the waves look like. It goes from radio to visible light, which are not a great danger for humans, to X ray which can be very dangerous if you spend to long around it.

  7. 7. What are the uses of the waves in the electromagnetic spectrum? Radio Waves: Carrying information, Bluetooth, wireless, TV, radio , control signals, remote control, navigation , radar , GPS, studying the universe. Microwaves: Communication , Cooking Infra – Red: You can see the temperature of objects, night vision goggles, TV remote Light: We can see things Ultra Violet (UV): Sun beds (tanning) , pubs and clubs may use UV light to check for fake money, nails. X Rays : We can see through the body to look at bones ; useful for hospitals. Gamma rays: Radiotherapy ; kills cancer cells.

  10. 10. Waves Waves can be described by amplitude , frequency and wavelength. Wavelength – The distance between a point on one wave and the same point of the next wave. (Horizontal) Amplitude – Maximum disturbance from its undisturbed position. Frequency – The number of waves produced each second. The frequency of a wave is measured in hertz. (HZ)

Transverse • • • TO DEMONSTRATE TRANSVERSE WAVES , YOU CAN MAKE WAVES USING A ROPE The vibrations are at right angles to the direction of travel Light and other types of electromagnetic radiation are transverse. Water waves are also transverse waves. Longitudinal Waves TO DEMONSTRATE LONGITUDINAL WAVES, YOU CAN USE A ‘SLINKY’ OR SPRING TO SHOW COMPRESSIONS • • Vibrations are along the same direction as the direction of energy and travel transfer. They show area of compression.
