Waves

  1. 1. By the end of the lesson you should be able to know...  Longitudinal & Transverse Waves  the properties of the electromagnetic spectrum
  2. 2. What type of waves do you know? Think of all the different types of waves you know and write them down. You have 2 minutes! Ocean wave X Ray Wave Ultra violet Microwave Sound Wave Gamma Radio wave Light wave Friendly wave! Mexican Wave Infrared There are many different types of waves...did you think of any more?
  3. 3. What is the electromagnetic spectrum? The electromagnetic spectrum covers all types of electromagnetic radiation. The squiggly line next to it is what the waves look like. It goes from radio to visible light, which are not a great danger for humans, to X ray which can be very dangerous if you spend to long around it.
  4. 4. These waves are in the electromagnetic spectrum. • • • • • • • Radio Waves Microwaves Infra – Red Light Ultra Violet (UV) X Rays Gamma rays You must remember the order of the electromagnetic spectrum because it goes from low energy to high energy. ELECTROMAGNETIC SPECTRUM
  5. 5. low energy high energy
  6. 6. Copy the diagram on the right, including illustrations!
  7. 7. What are the uses of the waves in the electromagnetic spectrum? Radio Waves: Carrying information, Bluetooth, wireless, TV, radio , control signals, remote control, navigation , radar , GPS, studying the universe. Microwaves: Communication , Cooking Infra – Red: You can see the temperature of objects, night vision goggles, TV remote Light: We can see things Ultra Violet (UV): Sun beds (tanning) , pubs and clubs may use UV light to check for fake money, nails. X Rays : We can see through the body to look at bones ; useful for hospitals. Gamma rays: Radiotherapy ; kills cancer cells.
  8. 8. Quick Quiz! 1. What is the electromagnetic spectrum? 2. Name one of the dangerous types in the EMS. 3. What comes third on the electromagnetic spectrum? What score did you get? Write it down: /3
  9. 9. It will be handy to do some revision as homework to remember what order the electromagnetic spectrum goes in and what it is.
  10. 10. Waves Waves can be described by amplitude , frequency and wavelength. Wavelength – The distance between a point on one wave and the same point of the next wave. (Horizontal) Amplitude – Maximum disturbance from its undisturbed position. Frequency – The number of waves produced each second. The frequency of a wave is measured in hertz. (HZ)
  11. 11. Oscillation - Vibrations
  12. 12. Quick Quiz! 1. 2. 3. 4. What is the correct name for the height of the wave? What is the correct name for the length of one wave crest to another? What measurement do we use to measure frequency? What is the correct definition for frequency ? What score did you get? Write it down: /4
  13. 13. Longitudinal and Transverse
  14. 14. Different types of waves... Transverse • • • TO DEMONSTRATE TRANSVERSE WAVES , YOU CAN MAKE WAVES USING A ROPE The vibrations are at right angles to the direction of travel Light and other types of electromagnetic radiation are transverse. Water waves are also transverse waves. Longitudinal Waves TO DEMONSTRATE LONGITUDINAL WAVES, YOU CAN USE A ‘SLINKY’ OR SPRING TO SHOW COMPRESSIONS • • Vibrations are along the same direction as the direction of energy and travel transfer. They show area of compression.
  15. 15. See for yourself... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ezODIKc1ck Knowing the definitions of a longitudinal and transverse wave is very important.
  16. 16. Quick Quiz! 1. 2. 3. Some waves are longitudinal. What are the oscillations? Describe a longitudinal wave... Describe a transverse wave... What score did you get? Write it down: /3
  17. 17. Homework:  Revise the topics we have covered this lesson: Waves – Longitudinal & Transverse Electromagnetic spectrum – What is it? Learn the order... Use www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcse/bi tesize to help! Re f o y o n e p h l e v r u x y s i s e r t s i c s s o n !
