Jeff Roach, FuelYouth engagement, Oct. 2015 As a generation bound both by immense technology potential and tough socio- economic environment, this is a generation who wants to create and innovate, who believe they can hack the world around them for the better. ✓ Forms learners giving the the skills XXI Century requires. ✓ Innovative teaching practices. ✓ Organizational model that favours interconnections and interdisciplinarity. ✓ Humanist focus of education, integrated with sustainability. 15. 15. How can a Citizen Observatory act as an innovative learning environment? (I) Students in the lead role Motivation and emotions while learning Open to participation of all students Cooperative learning A permeable environment, network collaboration
  16. 16. How can a Citizen Observatory act as an innovative learning environment? (II) Promotes interdisciplinarity Learning based on research Learning with technology Educate powerful citizens with an active role in environmental governance.
  17. 17. A Citizen Observatory also requires: ‣A careful design of the pedagogic activities carried out and of the assessment mechanisms. ‣Teaching staff with the necessary training. ‣Education centres organized with sufficient versatility so that Citizen Observatories can properly integrate them into them. ‣Incorporate authentic cooperation in the activities. ‣Time, knowledge and economic resources to access or purchase technological equipment.
  18. 18. Altres exemples projectes STEAM… Innovative learning environment Citizen Observatory Pilot Conclusions Conclusions ‣ Citizen Observatories can provide an innovative learning environment and a valuable educational platform for obtaining life skills. ‣ In Citizen Observatories, the students have the opportunity to actively participate in the process of scientific research and work for sustainability, collecting, interpreting or analysing data. ‣ The effectiveness of Citizen Observatories as innovative learning environments is highly dependent on the pedagogical design of the activities carried out and on the teaching staff’s role. ‣ Ultimately, the performance of Citizen Observatories also depends on the flexibility of the education centre for interdisciplinary collaboration and on their ability to open up for collaboration with the environment.
