  • Welcome to the training module on eZ430-Chronos Wireless Watch Development Tool.
  • This training module will introduce the eZ430 Chronos wireless watch development tool and its key functions.
  • The eZ430-Chronos is a highly integrated, wearable wireless development system that comes in a sports watch. It may be used as a reference platform for watch systems, a personal display for personal area networks, as a wireless sensor node for remote data collection, or simply as a watch. It is based on CC430 wireless system-on-chip and features high integration and low power consumption to help you create innovative applications. Besides being a watch, the chronos can be used as a design and measurement tool as well as a central hub for nearby wireless sensors to get real time information back to you. The Chronos includes all features behind a sports watch, so it can form basic functions like date, time, alarm, and stopwatch. The chronos also has an integrated 3-axis accelerometer, altimeter, and temperature sensor, so you can collect information about the movement and the environment.
  • The factory-loaded program makes the Chronos act as a basic watch fucniton, such as time, date, alarm and stopwatch. Advanced sport watch functions are also included, like heart rate monitoring, running speed monitoring, and distance tracking. The internal accelerometer provides acceleration data on the watch LCD and allows controlling a PC by transferring the sensor&apos;s measurements. The watch can also be used to control PowerPoint or other PC software with its buttons. Since it is a reprogrammable system, you can customize your own applications by connecting the watch module with the USB emulator.
  • Let’s look at what is inside the eZ430-Chronos box. It includes the Chronos watch and CD with software and documentation. The Phillips screwdriver is used to disassemble the watch. An eZ430 emulator with USBs debugging and programming interface enable you to reprogram the Chronos. It also contains an USB RF access point, so your PC can easily communicate with the watch.
  • There are 3 different versions of the eZ430-Chronos kit available, the eZ430-Chronos-433, -868, and -915. The only difference between each version is the RF operating frequency that is supported out-of-the-box. Having multiple operating frequencies available allows for the Chronos to comply with regional RF regulations worldwide . This development kit is NOT certified as conforming to Technical Regulations of Radio Law of Japan. Because each version is based on the CC430F6137, most of the other RF performance features are functionally the same on each version. Power consumption, bandwidth, data rate will be identical for each version. The data rate is independent of the radio frequency so it&apos;s possible to achieve the max data rate of 500 kbps using any Chronos version.
  • If you use the screwdriver to open screws and remove the metal back of watch, you will be able to see the watch module. In order to program and debug code on the CC430, it needs to be connected to a PC with a JTAG interface. The watch module includes the eZ430-RF JTAG interface for that purpose. Here we show the block diagram of the watch module. The core chip is the CC430F6137 MCU with its integrated &lt;1GHz radio transceiver. The MCU also controls the LCD and its temperature sensor is used for temperature measurement. The only other ICs on the watch PCB are pressure and acceleration sensors and the LCD backlight driver. The PCB does not include an antenna; the metal frame of the watch module that surrounds the LCD is used as antenna. The antenna is tuned for best performance when the watch is worn or held in hands.
  • The most important thing in the Chronos is based on CC430F6137 microcontroller. It is the high performance, single-chip, low-power RF solution for microcontroller-based applications. The core of the MCU is based on the powerful MSP430 16-bit RISC CPU. The MSP430 core is paired with a flexible CC1101 sub-1GHz RF transceiver that delivers the sensitivity and blocking performance required to achieve successful communication links in any RF environment. An extensive MSP430 MCU peripheral set will be available for CC430-based devices including intelligent, high-performance digital and analog peripherals like a 16-bit ADC and low power comparators. These peripherals also speed design by integrating functions such as an integrated Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) accelerator that encrypts and decrypts data sent wirelessly for more secure alarm and industrial monitoring systems. An additional feature is the on-chip LCD controller for LCD based applications.
  • The eZ430-Chronos kit includes a USB emulator that provides full programming and debugging features using its Spy-Bi-Wire (2-wire) interface. It features a back channel MSP430 application UART that may be used independently of a debug session. This allows the user to transfer serial data to a terminal window at a fixed rate of 9600 bps with no flow control. When you connect with the watch and the emulator, the watch module and the USB connector need to be on the same side of the PCB as shown in the upper figure. Be careful when connecting the watch module, its small plastic strips can get stuck at components on the emulator.
  • The USB RF access point is used for PC communication with the watch. The RF access point is based on the CC1111F32 controller, which features an integrated USB controller in addition to a &lt;1-GHz radio. The CC1111F32 MCU combines the excellent performance of the RF transceiver CC1101 with an industry-standard enhanced 8051 MCU. The access point is designed to be production ready and as small as possible. Therefore, no debug connector is added. However, it may be reprogrammed by attaching a TI low power wireless debug interface to the corresponding pads on the bottom side of the PCB.
  • The eZ430 Chronos Control Center allows you to see most of the wireless capabilities of the Chronos in action. It will wirelessly pair with the Chronos and allow you to plot accelerometer data, calibrate the accelerometer &amp; temperature altimeter sensor, enable motion-based control of the mouse, enable wireless control of powerpoint presentations, map the buttons on the chronos to user defined keyboard shortcuts, sync the time with your PC, emulate a heart rate monitor, etc.
