Global Statistics<br />There are 2.2 billion children in the world:<br />Number in poverty 1 billion (every second child)S<br />640 million without adequate shelter (1 in 3)<br />400 million with no access to safe water (1 in 5)<br />270 million with no access to health services (1 in 7)<br />Poverty kills about 24,ooo children a day.<br />Poverty kills close to 10 million children a year<br />Children out of education worldwide 121<br />

U.S Poverty Statistics <br />Over 15 million American children live in families with incomes below the federal poverty level, which is $22,050 a year for a family of four. <br />The number of children living in poverty increased by 33 percent between 2000 and 2009. <br />There are 3.8 million more children living in poverty today than in 2000.<br />

  7. 7. In the classroom <br />Zettie and her Mama left their warm and comfortable home in Jamaica for an uncertain life in the United Sates. With Papa gone, Mama can't find a steady job that will sustain them and so they are forced to live in their car. But Mama's unwavering love, support, and gutsy determination give Zettie the confidence that, together, she and her mother can meet all challenges.<br />
  8. 8. In the Classroom<br />Fly Away Home is the story of a little boy and his father who live in the airport. The book describes the daily living situation they experience: traveling from one terminal to the next based on flight schedules, returning luggage carts for spare change, trying to remain unnoticed from one day to the next. The little boy talks about his friends in the airport and the difficulties they face being homeless. One day a bird flies into the terminal and the boy cheers for it to get free, out of the confines of the airport.<br />
