3. 3. What is a decimal? <ul><li>A decimal is a fractional number and is indicated by digits after a period which is called a decimal point. </li></ul>
4. 4. COMPARING AND ORDERING <ul><li>Line up the decimals. </li></ul><ul><li>Fill in the empty spaces with zeroes. </li></ul><ul><li>Compare from the left. </li></ul>
5. 5. Work these! <ul><li>3.45 _____ .4591 </li></ul><ul><li>.432 ; .3128 ; .4219 ; 1.2 </li></ul><ul><li>.562 ; .2891 ; 2.34 ; 2.1 </li></ul>
6. 6. ROUNDING!!! <ul><li>Find the rounding place. </li></ul><ul><li>Look to the right of the rounding place. </li></ul><ul><li>If the number is five or greater, round up. </li></ul><ul><li>If the number is less than five, your rounding place stays the same. </li></ul><ul><li>Numbers behind the rounding place turn to zeroes in FRONT of the decimal. </li></ul><ul><li>Numbers behind the rounding place fall into the water BEHIND the decimal </li></ul>
7. 7. Work these! <ul><li>Round to the tenths: 3.2678 </li></ul><ul><li>Round to the hundredths: 125.6728 </li></ul><ul><li>Round to the ten thousandths: 2.387198 </li></ul>

MULTIPLYING!!! <ul><li>Line up the numbers. </li></ul><ul><li>Count the number of digits behind a decimal point </li></ul><ul><li>Multiply the numbers like you would whole numbers </li></ul><ul><li>Put the decimal at the end of the answer and move it the number of places you counted in step two. </li></ul>
9. 9. Work these!!! <ul><li>34.56 x 6.5 </li></ul><ul><li>8.973 x 7.6 </li></ul>
10. 10. DIVISION!!! <ul><li>Move the decimal to the end of the outside number. </li></ul><ul><li>Move the decimal the same number of places on the inside number. </li></ul><ul><li>Put the decimal on the roof. </li></ul><ul><li>Divide like you would with whole numbers. </li></ul><ul><li>If you have a remainder, add zeroes behind the decimal and continue dividing. </li></ul>
11. 11. Work these!!! <ul><li>Round Quotients to the nearest hundredths! </li></ul><ul><li>56.789 ÷ 4.5 </li></ul><ul><li>2.3866 ÷ .73 </li></ul>
12. 12. ESTIMATION!!! <ul><li>Round to the highest place value!! </li></ul><ul><li>Then work the problem! </li></ul>
