Jute is an important cash crop, which is as an intercrop before paddy transplantation
in most parts of the country. Jute Sector plays very important role in Indian Textile
Industry. Jute is called Golden fiber and after cotton it is the cheapest fiber available.
Jute, the golden fiber has gained immence popularity around the globe because of its
biodegradable character. Indian Jute Industry is the largest producer of raw jute and
jute products in the world. India is the second largest exporter of jute goods in world.
This sector is one of the major source of employment and supports the livelihood of 40
lakh farm families and 4 lakh workers.

The jute sector has been playing an important role in the economy of the country in
general and the eastern region in particular. About 4 million farmers, most of them
small and marginal, are engaged in the cultivation of Jute and Mesta and about 2.60
lakh workers are employed in the jute industry.
Jute Textile Industry is one of the major Industries in the Eastern India, particularly in
West Bengal. Jute supports around 40 Lakh farm families and provides direct
employment to 2.6 Lakh Industrial Workers and 1.4 Lakh in the tertiary sector. The
production process in the Jute Industry goes through a variety of activities, which
include cultivation of raw jute, processing of jute fibres, spinning, weaving, bleaching,
dyeing, finishing and marketing of both, the raw jute and its finished products. So,
Jute Industry is labour intensive and as such its labour-output ratio is also high in
spite of various difficulties being faced by the industry.

Capacity utilization of the industry is around 75 per cent. Jute industry contributes
to the export earnings in the range of Rs. 1,000 to Rs.1, 200 crore annually.
There are 33 odd districts spanning West Bengal, Orissa, Bihar and Assam, which
account for 98.41 per cent area under jute cultivation, as well as 98.43 per cent of
total raw jute production in the country. India accounts for an estimated 70 per cent of
the world’s total production of jute products. Over 90 mills are currently operational,
67 in West Bengal alone. The rest are in Bihar, Assam, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh and
Andhra Pradesh.

The global jute bag market reached a value of US$ 1.4 Billion in 2016. Jute is the
second most important fibre crop, after cotton. It is used in the production of
numerous products such as curtains, chair coverings, carpets, area rugs, hessian
cloth, and bags due to its versatile nature. Jute bags are biodegradable, recyclable,
reusable, and non-toxic and have some unique physical properties like high tenacity,
bulkiness, sound & heat insulation and low thermal conductivity. Owing to these
benefits, jute bags are widely being substituted for plastic bags across the globe.

The global jute bag market is growing on account of increasing environmental
concerns, such as rising pollution levels, and depletion of ozone layer and important
resources. This has prompted the consumers to shift towards environment-friendly
products and adopt viable alternatives to harmful materials such as plastic, especially
in western countries. Jute sack bags dominate the market, accounting for the
majority of the sales volume. Region-wise, India represents the leading producer of
jute bags, holding the majority of the shares. Other major regions include Bangladesh
and China.
