EffectiveUI & Water For People teamed up again for a dramatic new take on Water for People’s data reporting
tool. To promote Water for People’s mission of providing sustainable water to “Everyone Forever,” the tool
relies on data-driven design concepts and progressive visualization to promote the non-profit’s worldwide
humanitarian efforts.

CHALLENGE
Committed to providing
sustainable water and
sanitation access for “Everyone
Forever,” Water For People’s
mission is simple. The non-
profit’s data reporting tool,
however, was not.

CHALLENGE
With data from 30 regional
districts across nine different
countries, Water For People
needed a tool that conveyed
complex data in an easy-to-
understand and meaningful
way. So, the company enlisted
EffectiveUI to create the
solution.

TARGET AUDIENCE
The reporting tool was designed
for Water For People donors,
field workers and local
partners. With critical
information in one
comprehensive platform,
stakeholders can see the
overall impact as well as hone
in on specific regions, countries
and districts.

TARGET AUDIENCE
Donors and potential contributors
are able to see the breadth of
outcomes and impact. Regional
Water for People staff can analyze
the latest organizational data to
help drive progress toward
sustainability within local
communities. And local
communities and government
organizations can rely on new trend
analysis capabilities to make
informed decisions on ground
operations.

GUIDED EXPERIENCE
In the platform’s second version,
EffectiveUI redesigned the information
architecture and interaction model with
our target audience in mind. The site
flows from a district home page, to the
district goals and then into the metrics for
that district. The image to the right is an
example of three screens for the Pathar
Pratima district.

GUIDED EXPERIENCE
To make the data understandable, the
reporting tool includes a summary view of
the metrics, which is pictured to the right.
For a more in-depth perspective, users can
select “The Details” tab to see the context
behind the values.
These two perspectives provide a guided
experience for the viewer to digest Water for
People’s data.

IMPACT
EffectiveUI built the new tool using the same backend
platform but reinvented the front-end experience to
increase usability. Now, users can make sense of the
complex metrics they are seeing and understand the
context of those values in a guided story for every district.
With the increased functionality and usability, the
reporting tool facilitates conversation that evaluates
program success and learning.

METRICS EXAMPLES
Donors and stakeholders are
easily able to determine how
much is still needed to achieve
Water For People’s goal of
providing sustainable water for
“Everyone Forever.” This value
gives them a high level look,
and for more information they
can dive into the details behind
the dollar amount.

METRICS EXAMPLE
This screen demonstrates the
details behind the how much money
is still required for Water For
People to meet their goals. Since
data can now be aggregated over
time, Water For People can study
trends in their reports and better
predict ways to maximize activities.
In addition, data can be updated
more frequently as new data can be
immediately ingested as it comes
in.

DESIGN PROCESS
Throughout the design process,
the team focused on providing
meaningful and precise data
visualization and stunning
visual design. They also
centered their efforts on
creating a cohesive information
architecture and interaction
model.

DESIGN PROCESS
To achieve the design goals, EffectiveUI held workshops,
co-creation sessions and stakeholder interviews to learn
user needs. The team then sketched and prototyped the
designs; developed the tool, conducted usability testing
and led feedback focus groups. With the resulting
feedback, EffectiveUI completed the redesign and
developed the final product.
