  2. 2. What is Fiction? Anything made up or imagined. ~Novel and Short Story
  3. 3. What are CHARACTERS? <ul><li>People who take part in the action of the story </li></ul><ul><li>PROTAGONIST -main character in a story </li></ul><ul><li>ANTAGONIST - force or person in conflict with the main character </li></ul>
  4. 4. What are CHARACTERS? <ul><li>Characters can also be classified in these parts: </li></ul><ul><li>Main – the most important characters </li></ul><ul><li>Minor – less important characters </li></ul>
  5. 5. What is THEME and SETTING? <ul><li>THEME -the main idea the author wishes to share with the reader </li></ul><ul><li>SETTING -time and place the story occurs present/past/future real/imaginary </li></ul>
  6. 6. What is PLOT? EXPOSITION RISING ACTION CLIMAX FALLING ACTION RESOLUTION Chain of events that make up a story Conflict
  7. 7. PLOT BREAKDOWN <ul><li>EXPOSITION - opening of a story that gives background information, introduction to characters and sometimes the conflict is introduced </li></ul>
  8. 8. PLOT BREAKDOWN <ul><li>RISING ACTION - more complex actions occur, problems are more complicated and a desire to find out what happens next is created </li></ul>
  9. 9. PLOT BREAKDOWN <ul><li>CLIMAX- intensity of a story reaches a peak and a turning point in action occurs that affects the outcome of the ending </li></ul>
  10. 10. PLOT BREAKDOWN <ul><li>FALLING ACTION- intensity of the story subsides and the results of the major events wind down and are described </li></ul>
  11. 11. PLOT BREAKDOWN <ul><li>RESOLUTION ( denouement) - final part of a story that tells the ending and any loose ends are tied up and questions answered </li></ul>
