Everyone needs to bring: Binoculars for each member in your party. The animal won’t wait while you pass the glasses around. Great walking shoes. Ports tend to have uneven walking surfaces. Denali has plenty of challenging trails. Some warm clothing for glacier viewing on the ship. It is a large ice field, so dress appropriately.
But…there is so much to see ashore too!
Every Norwegian Cruise Line Cruisetour is escorted. Most of the competitors’ cruisetours are “reps” meaning that an employee is stationed in each destination that the cruisetour travels to. These reps do not travel with the guests and thus can’t offer the continuity that a Norwegian Alaska Tour Director can. NCL is partnering with Premier Alaska to offer this to every NCL guest: Premier employees were born and raised in Alaska or have lived there many years Tour guides / drivers are encouraged to talk about their own Alaska experiences first hand Premier employees are proud to talk about their home. For them, Alaska is a very special place.
Iditarod Mushers Home
All four NCL Cruisetours spend two nights in Denali National Park This is by far where most guests see the wildlife they have hope to view including moose, Dall Sheep, wolves, caribou and grizzly bears
Because Denali National Park place to see wildlife, it is also important that the Cruisetour selected offers the best possible opportunity to view these incredible creatures. A large percentage of the Cruisetours offered by competitors of Norwegian Cruise Line offer only the Natural History Tour. For an additional fee many will upgrade their guests to the Tundra Wilderness Tour. But the guest has to know why they would even want to do this and space is often very limited. Three of Norwegian Cruise Lines four Cruisetours offers the best tour into Denali National Park – the Tundra Wilderness Tour. Only the “Denali Express” Cruisetour offers a shorter Natural History Tour. This is because of the brevity of the Cruisetour.
Denali National Park has only one road into the interior of the National Park. This road, 95 miles in length is highly regulated for the protection of the environment and the wildlife. Along with a shuttle system for backpackers and hikers, there are two types of tours offered on this restricted road. The first is the Natural History Tour. This tour travels into a check point known as Primrose Ridge. This is the blue line indicated on the map. Though this is an excellent tour, well done and very informative, it has two major disadvantages; a. The chances of seeing a variety of wildlife are greatly reduced and the potiential view of Mount McKinley itself is very limited. The second line (red) shows the route that three of the four Norwegian Cruise Line Cruisetours travel. This is the route of the Tundra Wilderness tour. It heads into the interior of Denali National Park another 46 miles to a turn around point know as Stony Hill Overlook. In route guests pass several significant wildlife habitats such as Sable Pass, where 78% of the bears viewed in the park are seen. The box on the map indicates where most wildlife is seen in Denali National Park. You can see that it is well beyond where the Natural History tour ends. The majority of Norwegian’s Alaska Cruisetours offer guests the best possible opportunity to view the wildlife they have come so far to see.
As important is the difference between the two tours concerning the view of Mount McKinley (Denali) when it is visible. Because the Natural History tour only reaches Primrose ridge, one third of Mount McKinley, when visible, can be seen from this tour. Compared to the Natural History Tour, the Tundra Wilderness Tour offers a stunning view of Denali, virtually from the base of the mountain to the top at 20320 feet.
Adventure Class Alaska Railroad cars offer a “wandering style” experience which allows the group to mix at various places on the train during the 8 hour ride from Anchorage to Denali or the 4 hour trip from Denali to Fairbanks. Guests can walk throughout the cars and not feel confined. Traveling in a group allows for not only the sharing of common interests, but an opportunity to experience the beauty of Alaska with other travelers.
• Wide aisle that guests can stand in and enjoy while visiting with others in their group. • Extra Large seats with more recline, headrest and leg room than a first-class airline seat. All seats face forward. • Convenient Deli menu in the Bistro car for lighter meals that is available anytime during the train trip. Fine dining is available in the dining car. • Large picture windows are assigned in the Adventure Railcar section. Guests can wander to the shared Vista Dome railcar at their leisure. Views are out of the windows and not through the roof. Vista Dome seats are left unassigned and are open for everyone. • Drinks are served in the Bistro cars and can be enjoyed train wide. • Local Alaskan students take a special 10-week training course in preparation for this job. Supplemented by Norwegian Cruise Line Tour Director.
