  1. 1. 07/09/2016 1 Data Dr Phil Bartie Data Data, , • The opinions expressed in this talk are my own and not necessarily those of my employer Small print: • EDINA sponsorship discussions are ongoing and yet to be finalised Digimap is GREAT! EDINA is GREAT! © OS Strategi® Open Govt Licence YOU ARE HERE

  3. 3. 07/09/2016 3 • GIS is now a CORE module for 3rd year GEOGRAPHY and ENV SCIENCE UG students • Dept. sees GIS as a desirable skill that makes students more employable • Last year we had 112 UG students on the module – makes labs challenging! • Teach ESRI ArcGIS labs + GISc lectures + assessed by coursework • Environmental Management Masters - GIS / OE also taught in a Geomatics module (about 15-30 each year) • Use Digimap data for teaching across UG / PG labs - e.g. OS Terrain 5 DTM + OS Merdian • OS Roam – basemaps for Geography field trip to Lochgoilhead • PhD / PostDoc / Staff using GIS (not just UK based research) • EO – eg Globolakes project Biology & Environmental Sciences Digimap is GREAT! My journey... • MSc in GIS at University of Edinburgh • Used Digimap for spatial data as a student during the degree • Dissertation used OS Master Map in conjunction with Environment Agency LiDAR data GeoHealth Lab - University of Canterbury (NZ) • Director of Lab => Prof Jamie Pearce • Assigned to work on a Research Project => Neighbourhoods and Health • LINZ could provide some background maps but lacked detail / missing attribute data • Had to map location of pubs, supermarkets, beaches, parks (before OpenStreetMap) = Months of begging for data from lots of different councils / data holders… Landcare Research (NZ) Landcare Research is one of New Zealand's Crown Research Institutes. The focus of the research at this company is the environment, biodiversity, and sustainability. Lambcare Research (NZ) • Often quoted EDINA as an example of how to share geospatial datasets online • Hired ex-EDINA staff David Medyckyj-Scott
  4. 4. 07/09/2016 4 Koordinates (Ltd) • Launched in 2007 • Online Geospatial data sharing • Hosted in Amazon Cloud (EC2) • Uses PostgreSQL + PostGIS on server side • Export data in choice of formats + coordinate system • Lots of data free to end user, some pay per feature (eg road centreline) https://koordinates.com/ “We believe Earth is our greatest asset, which is why we are transforming how Earth’s data is published and used.” https://koordinates.com/ Data Quality • OSM vs OS • Especially important to have ‘survey grade’ map data for some applications • eg when using LiDAR data for feature visibility modelling OS vs OpenStreetMap vs LiDAR
  5. 5. 07/09/2016 5 Radial Distortion (Distance/Angle of Object relative to camera position at time of image) Camera Move to Right Research Viewpoint
  6. 6. 07/09/2016 6 >1000 hours of testing RAW user trajectories
  7. 7. 07/09/2016 7 Particle Filters OSMOS MasterMap Edinburgh Castle Site = 326 polygons (Mas terMap data,Ordnance Surv ey © Crown copy right. All rights res erv ed OS)) OS SITES Layer - Partonomy Student use of Digimap Roam + online annotation OS Roam – useful for students to annotate and make custom to scale maps when the student doesn’t have GIS skills
  8. 8. 07/09/2016 8 Very important that students and academics have access to high quality spatial data for teaching and research What’s Missing (or perhaps I’m just not aware of it)? • LiDAR data – inc. point clouds (previously on Landmap) • Recent multiband imagery (e.g. GetMapping, Geoeye, Worldview) • Thermal imagery • Dynamic / Temporal data (e.g. traffic datasets) • Webmapping service as background for GIS desktop • Ability to filter download based on attributes not area ( eg OS MasterMap all parks) • As users we should be making more of the data sharing functionality – via a slippy map
