The Budi dan Iwan Comic Video has been designed to promote an in-class discussion about the risks associated with children sharing personal information and sending photos online.

The Story is about two boys being manipulated by an individual they meet during an online game who asks them to send increasingly personal information and engage in activities in front of a webcam. The Budi dan Iwan Video is intended for Grade 5 to 9 students because children at this age become more interested in online activities, however they do not yet have the capacity to effectively manage some of the situations they may encounter.

LESSON PLAN Overview The Budi dan Iwan Comic Video has been designed to promote an in-class discussion about the risks associated with children sharing personal information and sending photos online. The Story is about two boys being manipulated by an individual they meet during an online game who asks them to send increasingly personal information and engage in activities in front of a webcam. The Budi dan Iwan Video is intended for Grade 5 to 9 students because children at this age become more interested in online activities, however they do not yet have the capacity to effectively manage some of the situations they may encounter. Outcome The students will be able to identify the benefits and the risks of the internet and they will be able to respond safely to situations that present risks online. Activate prior knowledge Create a Class Mind Map 1. Use a flipchart and write a topic in the middle of the page (the following questions can be used as ideas to generate a topic) - What activities to you perform online (online games, social media, research, etc.)? - What is good about the internet? - What are the risks of the internet? - Where can you talk to people online? 2. As the students generate their thoughts and ideas start forming a mind map by writing or sketching their ideas on the flipchart and drawing branches from the topic connecting to those ideas. 3. Try to encourage the students to grow more and more ideas. 4. Repeat branching until all of the students’ ideas appear on the map.
  3. 3. Presentation 1. Before showing the students the video, explain that the are going to watch an illustration about two friends who like to play games online. The two boys and up in an unsafe situation. Explain to the students that they are going to complete some activities and make suggestions about what the boys can do to be safer. Tell the students that the video has an open end and after watching the video they will be asked to come up with ideas of how the video could have ended. 2. Show the video to the students. Guided Practice 1. Ask the students to think about the following questions and discuss them with a partner or in a group. Finally, share as a class. - At what point in the comic does the conversation between Huskar_13 and ShadowDemon1 seem weird? - Why does Budi video chat with ShadowDemon1? - How does Iwan feel when they are asked to take off the shirt? How do you know? - What do you think Iwan should have done, if the brother hadn’t come downstairs? - Why does Budi think ShadowDemon1 is a good friend? Do you think he is right? Why or why not? - What should the have done to stay safe? 2. Ask the students to share their ideas of how the story could have ended in class. Prompts to bring up during the discussion - Talk and educate about the process of sexual grooming online. - Not only girls but also boys can be sexually exploited online. - Sexual exploitation online is not only a risk of online games but also of social media websites like facebook, Instagram, snapchat, etc.

Read the following ending and discuss it as a class. “After Budi’s brother enters the room and asks what was going on, the boys stop fighting and Iwan tells the brother about what happened. Iwan explains about the “weird” situation and how he started to feel very uncomfortable in it. Budi’s brother asks the boys, if they know who ShadowDemon1 really is. The boys look at each other and shake their heads. Budi’s brother continues explaining that it is very dangerous to share personal data, photos or videos with people you don’t know online. He explains that he learned in school that many children are sexually exploited online and that they have to be very careful when they spend time on the internet. The brother suggests, that whenever they feel uncomfortable in a situation online again, they should ask a person they trust before continuing their activities.” 4. Have each student draw, write or represent an ending to the story that has Budi and Iwan responding and acting in a way that keeps them safe.
