  5. 5. Rockaway! Arts Festival Rockaway! public arts festival celebrated the reopening of historic Fort Tilden and recognized the ongoing recovery of the Rockaway peninsula. The festival attracted more than 12,000 people during its two-month run in 2014.
  6. 6. MarianS. Heiskell Beach Grass Nursery at Floyd Bennett Field A 3.25-acre beach grass nursery at Floyd Bennett Field. Plants from the nursery are used to stabilize dunes that buffer the Rockaway coastline from storms and sea level rise.
  7. 7. Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge Jamaica BayWildlife Refuge North and South Garden • North Garden work to be completed by late 2017 • The project will be followed by long-term monitoring of the site and adaptive management.

  • JBRPC works to expand public access; increase recreational and educational opportunities; foster citizen stewardship and volunteerism; preserve and restore natural areas, including wetland and wildlife habitat; enhance cultural resources; and ensure the long-term sustainability of the parklands.
  • Organized by MoMA PS1 and the Rockaway Artists Alliance, Rockaway! featured solo projects by Patti Smith, Janet Cardiff and Adrián Villar Rojas at Fort Tilden and an international group show with theHonolulu Biennial at the Rockaway Beach Surf Club. Patti Smith's installation of five granite blocks engraved with Walt Whitman quotes will remain on permanent display at Fort Tilden.

  • Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge
     Restore native plant communities, including flood and salt-tolerant plants, to create better habitat for migratory birds and improve the site’s ability to recover from future floods.
    Complete baseline biological monitoring, including surveys of birds, soils, vegetation and insects for long-term monitoring.
    Reduce invasive plants on approximately 14-acres of parkland.
