Ventajas de IPv6

  1. 1. IPv6 o no IPv6 - ¿Qué hacer? - RecargarDr. Eduardo Castro MartínezMicrosoft MVPecastro@mswindowscr.orghttp://comunidadwindows.orghttp://tiny.cc/comwindowshttp://ecastrom.blogspot.com
  2. 2. Session Objectives And Takeaways• Session Objective(s): – Identify the deployment blockers when deploying IPv6 – Explain how to solve those blockers – Recommend a staged migration
  3. 3. Agenda• To• IPv6…• Or• Not• To• IPv6…• Q&A
  4. 4. IPv6 Fundamentals• Introduction to IPv6• Unicast IPv6 Addresses• Configuring IPv6
  5. 5. IPv4 LimitationsThe limitations of IPv4 are:• Limited number of addresses• Routing difficult to manage• Host configuration is complex• No built-in security• Limited quality of service
  6. 6. IPv6 ImprovementsImprovements in IPv6 include:• Larger address space• More efficient routing• Simpler host configuration• Built-in security• Better prioritized delivery support• Redesigned headers for efficient processing and extensibility
  7. 7. IPv6 Address SpaceThe IPv6 address space is:• 128 bits• Extremely large• Allows routing flexibility
  8. 8. IPv6 Address SyntaxIPv6 addresses are:• Displayed in hexadecimal• Can use zero compression• Use a prefix to define the network portion of the address rather than a subnet maskExamples: 2001:0DB8:0000:0000:02AA:00FF:FE28:9C5A/64 2001:DB8:0:0:2AA:FF:FE28:9C5A/64 2001:DB8::2AA:FF:FE28:9C5A/64

  11. 11. To IPv6 or Not To IPv6• How many times have you been asked on how to disable IPv6?
  12. 12. To IPv6 or Not To IPv6• CSS – in Particular CTS gets a lot of Support calls regarding IPv6
  13. 13. To IPv6 or Not To IPv6• Microsoft Internal People are „bombing“ aliases with queries regarding IPv6…
  14. 14. To IPv6 or Not To IPv6• But why do all these people try to disable this feature? – Even Microsoft Internal people…
  15. 15. To IPv6 or Not To IPv6• Most Modern Operating Systems Support IPv6… Ours… Vista+ – Apple (10.3), MAC OS X Leopard, BSD, HP-UX 22iv2, AIX 6, Linux 2.6 Kernel and Solaris 2.10

  27. 27. To IPv6 or Not To IPv6• There are some „valid“ points tough…
  28. 28. To IPv6 or Not To IPv6 • There are some „valid“ points tough…A bigger header is necessary due to the 128 bit IPv6addresses but is not the only factor for networkperformance.Other factors, such as a fixed-size header and negotiableMTUs help optimize forwarding and provide a betterpayload/header ratio.A bigger problem in reality is that IPv6 is slow becausethere’s hardware offload support for IPv4 but not for IPv6(e.g. in server NICs doing TCP checksum offload). Oncesimilar offload support is provided for IPv6, there will be nocomparative difference.
  29. 29. To IPv6 or Not To IPv6 Final Word…“Implementing IPv6 has consumed less than 1 percent of our IT budget, and the IT budget is only a smallpart of the overall corporate budget. These costs are modest compared to the expected benefits.” Fred Wettling, Bechtel Fellow and Technology Strategy Manager, Bechtel Corporation
