3. Innovation & its activities
Innovation is without doubt a
confusing “buzzword” nowadays.
Anyone confirms that is extremely
important, but no one can agree
with its definition
A simple Google search at
“innovation definition” provides
385 million results with definitions
The application of better solutions
meeting new requirements,
unarticulated needs or existing
market needs
Accomplished through more
effective products, processes,
services, technologies or business
models that are readily available to
markets, governments and society
Innovation is generally
considered to be the result of a
process that brings together
various novel ideas in a way
that they have an impact on
society
Innovation activities: all
scientific, technological,
organizational, financial and
commercial steps lead on the
implementation of innovations
It includes also R&D that is not
directly related to the
development of a specific
innovation (Oslo Manual,
2005)
4. What is innovation?
“Innovation is the ability of individuals, companies
and entire nations to continuously create their
desired future”
John Kao, “Innovation Nation” (2007)
EU, 2013
9. Both inflows and outflows of
knowledge to improve
internal innovation and
expand the markets for
external exploitation of
innovation.
“Open innovation assumes
that firms can and should use
external ideas & internal
ideas, internal & external
paths to market, as they look
to advance their technology”.
“Innovating with partners by
sharing risk and sharing
reward”
11. “Tesla Motors was created to accelerate the advent of sustainable
transport. If we clear a path to the creation of compelling electric
vehicles, but then lay intellectual property landmines behind us to
inhibit others, we are acting in a manner contrary to that goal.
Tesla will not initiate patent lawsuits against anyone who, in good
faith, wants to use our technology.”
12. What is Start-up?
Being newly founded does not in itself make a company
a start-up. Nor is it necessary for a start-up to work on
technology, or take venture funding, or have some sort
of "exit"
A start-up is a company designed to grow fast.
The only essential thing is growth. Everything else we
associate with start-ups follows from growth (Paul
Graham)

The knowledge economy is the use of knowledge to generate tangible and intangible values. Technology and in particular knowledge technology help to transform a part of human knowledge to machines. This knowledge can be used by decision support systems in various fields and generate economic values.
A key concept of the knowledge economy is that knowledge and education (often referred to as "human capital") can be treated as one of the following two:
A business product, as educational and innovative intellectual products and services can be exported for a high value return.
A productive asset
Innovation is a “buzzword” nowadays….
A simple Google search at “innovation definition” -> 385 millions results in a few seconds
Innovation can be viewed as the application of better solutions that meet new requirements, unarticulated needs or existing market needs -> More effective products – processes, services, technologies or business models.
It is the results of process bringing together various novel ideas in a way that has an impact in society.
Innovation activities all the steps (scientific, technological, organizational, financial and commercial) on the implementation of innovations.
But, what is innovation actually???
Innovation is the creation of new or significantly improved products, marketing, processes and organization -> add value to markets, governments and society.
The evolution of lights and wheels…
The evolution of payment….
The evolution of technology and innovation…
The evolution of lights and wheels…
The evolution of payment….
The evolution of technology and innovation…
Innovation is everywhere… in all the sciences and is extremely correlated with research and development (engineering, life and information & communication).
In environment: - materials (see Graphene project of TEI), health, food industry, energy (renewable energy sources), transportation (electric cars, metro etc), aerospace & defense) ,
Computer Engineering as we talk about a knowledge based – digital economy….
The characteristics of an innovation have to do with the diffusion and adoption of an innovation….
In simple words, how quickly and easily consumers will adopt an innovation
There are different models of innovation… Open and Close…
The new model used in order to increase the level of innovativeness is Open Innovation -> both inflows and outflows of knowledge to improve internal innovation and expand the markets for external exploitation of innovation
The phrase of O.I. Is “Innovating with partners by sharing risk and sharing reward”
The open innovation model is based on the assumption that 'innovation is a distributed process across many actors, companies and other organisations, and is influenced by regulation, policy and social pressure.' Innovation occurs in the context of an ecosystem, with different actors taking part in the process:
large and small companies, including start-ups, that commercialise innovations;
universities and research-performing organisations that train people and produce new knowledge;
venture capital, research-funding organisations and other financial institutions that provide funding for R&D activities and business development;
government actors influencing the innovation environment through policies, regulations and the adoption of standards.
The term 'innovation ecosystem' was coined to reflect the continuous interactions and flows of skills, knowledge and money needed between these actors for the innovation process to be sustained
“Tesla Motors was created to accelerate the advent of sustainable transport. If we clear a path to the creation of compelling electric vehicles, but then lay intellectual property landmines behind us to inhibit others, we are acting in a manner contrary to that goal. Tesla will not initiate patent lawsuits against anyone who, in good faith, wants to use our technology.”
Κάθε ρεκόρ έχουν σπάσει οι παραγγελίες για το νέο ηλεκτρικό της Tesla, καθώς μέσα στην πρώτη εβδομάδα ξεπέρασαν τις 325.000!
Με δεδομένο ότι κάθε παραγγελία του Model 3 συνοδεύεται από την καταβολή 1.000 δολαρίων/1.000 ευρώ, η εταιρεία από την Καλιφόρνια βάζει στα ταμεία της περίπου 325 εκατ. δολάρια, ρευστό που είχε άμεσα ανάγκη. Είναι όμως όλα ρόδινα για την Tesla;

You hear all the time start-up , start-up competition, funding of start-up, accelerator of startups and others phrases have to do with start-ups…
But what is start-up? Is it a new established coffee shop opened in our neighborhood ? Is a new bakery? Is uber a start-up? Taxibeat?
No, companies are not characterized start-ups depend on their establishment time or their technological capacity… but for their scope and aim that is to grow fast… raise funding and after to be established or achieve a acquisition from a large company…
Example of acquisition -> whats app from Facebook for 19 billion $.
All start with an idea and then come all the other phases.
Accelerators and incubators- > two “hot” places for start-ups and innovation… But, what are the differences between these two?
Innovation hubs are the places where the creation of innovation’s culture is achieved.
- Netherlands Embassy in Athens.
