  2. 2. Unhealthy Behaviour<br />Abuse<br />(cruel) negative behaviour that often causes harm<br />can be:<br />physical<br />verbal<br />emotional<br />sexual<br />Harassment<br />unwelcome and uninvited attention that causes distress (negative results)<br />can take many forms<br />

Forms of Harassment<br />Bullying<br />cruel behaviour (abuse) focused on a specific person or group<br />usually the bully and victim know each other but are not friends<br />often involves a power difference<br />physical power<br />social power<br />intellectual power<br />emotional hurt from bullying can last a lifetime<br />

Forms of Harassment<br />Physical Bullying<br />hitting, kicking<br />stopping someone from moving / leaving the situation<br />taking or damaging property<br />Verbal Bullying<br />name calling, insulting, teasing, threatening<br />often much more difficult to see the negative effects<br />Relational Bullying<br />telling rumours<br />ostracizing someone (keeping the person out of a group)<br />
  5. 5. Forms of Harassment<br />Racial / Ethnocultural Harassment<br />Bullying / harassing someone because one of the following things is different about them:<br />race<br />skin colour<br />religious beliefs<br />ethnic origin (family background)<br />citizenship<br />

Forms of Harassment<br />Sexual Harassment<br />unwanted sexual comments, advances and requests for sexual favours<br />comments about a persons body<br />telling offensive jokes, showing offensive pictures<br />inappropriate staring<br />Discrimination<br />treating someone differently because they are different in some way<br />behaviour that shows prejudice to a person or group of people<br />
  7. 7. Discrimination vs Harassment<br />Harassment is intentional and deliberately cruel (causing hurt or harm)<br />Discrimination may not have the intention of causing harm<br />Unfair<br />

Teasing vs Harassment<br />Teasing<br />A comment or joke that is critical, but is also:<br />respectful (not meaning to insult)<br />affectionate (with a friend or someone you like)<br />considerate (thought about before to stop hurt or harm)<br />Can be difficult to know sometimes what is teasing and what is harassment<br />
  9. 9. Teasing vsHarassment – A Blurry Line<br />Remember,<br />Harassment is uninvited and unwanted<br />How can we know for sure if the comments we are saying are wanted, or not wanted?<br />If someone asks you to stop teasing, but you continue, you are harassing them<br />
  10. 10. Preventing Harassment<br />Ways to stop harassment:<br />ask for harassers to stop<br />sometimes, the people don’t know they are harassing<br />avoid the harassing person / situation<br />get help<br />an adult<br />teacher<br />police officer<br />
  11. 11. Preventing Harassment<br />Seeing harassment happen, and ignoring it IS NOT OK<br />if you do nothing to stop harassment, you are :<br />saying that it is ok<br />encouraging the harasser to continue<br />
