  1. 1. 4 Vol. 45 January 7, 2020 Number 1 “He Loves Me So” Barry Kennedy “Valentine’s Day” is a day of flowers, candy, jewelry, but most importantly, it is a day to celebrate love. Almost everyone uses the word love on a regular basis. People say things such as, “I love this shirt,” “I love this food,” or “I love this weather.” The interesting point is that, with the same word, we tell our mother, father, sibling, friend, and yes, spouse, “I love you.” Do we mean the same thing? Are we to insist that we love an article of clothing as much as a close person in our lives? Of course not. Most everyone knows that there are different degrees of “LOVE.” God’s word has overwhelmingly emphasized the fact that God loves us. However, do we truly know what degree of love He has shown to us? “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13). Jesus laid down His life for our sins. Jesus endured much agony, especially in the last days of His life here on earth. In the Garden of Gethsemane, the agony is described in very graphic detail. Jesus informed His disciples that He was “sorrowful even unto death” (Matthew 26:38). Mark records how that Jesus “fell on the ground and prayed” (Mark 14:35). Of course, Luke points out how that Jesus was in such distress and agony that “His sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling to the ground” (Luke 22:44). This is the most passionate prayer anyone could ever imagine. One must ask himself, “Why would Jesus place Himself in this great distress?” One word will answer that question and it is LOVE. Jesus allowed Himself to be a sacrifice for the sin of the world (John 1:29). Just listen to what Jesus said, “Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father” (John 10:17, 18). Jesus did not just throw His life out there to be some sort of hero to the masses. Jesus tenderly planned and fulfilled His oath of love for His creation man. Romans 5:8 describes Jesus’ actions as commending His love toward us even while we were still living in sin. Oh, it is true that nothing can separate us from that magnitude of love (Romans 8:38, 39). Yes, Jesus truly loves us so. --article continued page 2-- ELDERS Mike Childers..............397-6453 Dennis Hallmark .........255-5557 Mark Hitt.....................322-0917 Bobby Lindley.............260-9193 DEACONS Wade Bryan.................419-5552 William Harris.............416-8149 Ricky Lindsey .............255-8136 Jeff Mansel..................871-0357 Jimmy Spearman.........840-8957 Michael Wilson ...........891-0891 PREACHER Barry Kennedy ... 2. 2. --article continued from page 1-- Sometimes people contrast or try to separate love and punishment. Questions arise such as, “if God loves us so much, why would He cause us to be lost?” Do parents not discipline their children and what is the motive of that discipline? The Bible says, “For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth” (Hebrews 12:6). The desired result is obedience. Many see that as a negative. We should not have to be “told what to do and what not to do!” The point that this immature mindset fails to realize is that we often fail to know what is good for ourselves. Solomon said, “There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death” (Proverbs 16:25). Yes, Jesus loves me this I know for the Bible tells me so (John 3:16). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ladies’ Monthly Fellowship The ladies’ monthly fellow- ship and Bible study will be held this Thursday, Jan. 9 at 6:00 p.m. in the multipur- pose room.
