Directions <ul><li>Correct the essay in red pen and a highlighter. </li></ul><ul><li>Write your name on the top of the paper. </li></ul><ul><li>Next to your name, write the heading of the slide that you’re checking for. </li></ul><ul><li>Write comments on what they did wrong. </li></ul><ul><li>Comment in complete sentences on what they did right. </li></ul>

Preparation <ul><li>Circle every subject of every clause in the essay. </li></ul><ul><li>Underline all of the simple predicates. </li></ul><ul><li>Highlight each sentence that has more than one subject. </li></ul><ul><li>Highlight any sentence that does not start with the subject. </li></ul>

Comma Rule #1 <ul><li>(To separate two contiguous clauses with a conjunction) </li></ul><ul><li>Review the highlighted sentences. </li></ul><ul><li>Any sentence with more than one subject needs a comma and a conjunction. </li></ul><ul><li>Do those sentences have a comma and a conjunction? </li></ul>
  5. 5. Comma Splice <ul><li>If the are separating the two clauses with a comma but no conjunction, place a “cs” over the comma to indicate their error. </li></ul>

Comma Rule #2 <ul><li>(To indicate an introductory word, phrase, or clause) </li></ul><ul><li>Review the highlighted sentences. </li></ul><ul><li>Any sentence what does not start with a subject needs a comma indicating the introductory word, phrase, or clause. </li></ul><ul><li>Do these sentences have a comma indicating the introductory word, phrase, or clause? </li></ul>
  7. 7. Semicolon Rule <ul><li>(To separate two contiguous clauses without a conjunction) </li></ul><ul><li>Another way to divide the two clauses is with a semicolon, but no conjunction should follow. </li></ul><ul><li>Are there semicolons in their essay? Are they being used correctly? </li></ul>
  8. 8. Fragments <ul><li>Review all of the sentences. </li></ul><ul><li>Every sentence needs a circle and an underline indicating a subject and a predicate. </li></ul><ul><li>If there are any sentence missing a circle or an underline, write “fragment” next to it. </li></ul>
