  11. 11. WHAT INNOVATION IS NOT
  12. 12. INNOVATION IN HEALTHCARE What has redefined our industry or created purposeful change Good or Bad? Managed Care Transplantation EMR??? PHR?? DNP??? MHI- It’s a leadership Degree
  13. 13. CAN INNOVATION EXIST IN THE PRESENCE OF POLICIES Yes & No! How long does it take to create and approve a policy? How fast do things change? Can policy creation keep up? Do specific Practice Policies (in hospitals) allow for innovation to flurish? Is the wording supportive of innovation and EBP changes?
  14. 14. BUT WE NEED POLICIES (REMEMBER THE LAWYERS) Have a policy on innovation Innovation Easy as small pilot projects “Leaders tend to delay process modifications until there is significant research & documented evidence for new processes” If you do this---its too late
  15. 15. SO WE NEED TO COMPRIMISE We need Policy & Innovation ---BALANCE THEM Clockware Algorithms, giving report, Code Arrests Swarmware Patient flow, staffing patterns, leadership styles, staff identified problems
  16. 16. WHO ARE YOU INNOVATORS & WHERE DOES INNOVATION COME FROM FRONTLINE healthcare workers They are immersed and deal with the problems daily They have the most benefit for change They have improvised (“McGyvered”) solutions But cannot share them! Or are shot down when presenting them
  17. 17. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN Care for innovation YOU need to be vulnerable, open, & Authentic Create a culture of trust
  18. 18. STOP THE HIERARCHY Top-down to LEADER-FACILITATOR Overcome the natural resistance to change UH OH….. SCARY!!!!! You don’t have to do this alone Tap the expertise of your colleagues Don’t hate the innovator they are disruptive because there is a problem

  21. 21. SUPPORTIVE AND RESPECTFUL Support a culture that balances innovation and stability The code The pilot projects NOT everything needs changing RIGHT NOW The leader facilitates the knowledge workers to self organize around problems
  22. 22. OPEN AND SENSITIVE Anticipate outcomes Develop loose project plans Identify areas of negative impact DO NOT PLAY DEVILS ADVOCATE Don’t hide, just be honest DO NOT shoot down ideas with out giving them a chance to try or reformulate them
  23. 23. PATIENCE & HONESTY Openness to recognizing the barriers to innovative ideas Top down structure of managing Poor relationships between YOU and Workers Being aware of the culture of the organization Honestly and sincerely ask questions Create real relationships!
  24. 24. PATIENCE What do you live with, learn from, and if you fear it, it can cripple you? ERROR Don’t punish error, learn from it Move beyond Root Cause Analysis Look at the system Reformulate the innovation Try again This Takes TIME!!
  25. 25. OK, LETS BRING IT BACK TO POLICY Be able to adapt policy quickly and effectively Things don’t have to be perfect Challenge Policies & Look for Better ways If its outdated and no longer relevent REWRITE IT, even if YOU wrote it If it ain’t broke, you can still fix it (improve) It just means it hasn’t hurt a large amount of people yet Policies should reflect innovation and change Set a Vision for innovation & Support it with policies that talk the talk & walk the walk
  26. 26. SO WHAT DOES ALL THIS MEAN What are the elements of innovative policy 1. Factor in some money 1. We will give x amount every year to best innovation idea 2. Factor in some time 1. Each team member will have x hours to work on this 3. Factor in some support 1. Room space, computer usage, tech support, brainstorming supplies 4. Reduce the RED TAPE 1. Be aware of barriers, and break them down for the innovator
  27. 27. WHAT DOES ALL THIS MEAN Allow for collaboration Cooperate with multiple areas to build a dynamic team Promote the innovation Have an innovation fair/competition This breeds better creativity and resourcefulness Do it all again, every year, 6 months, month
