2 samuel 7a A good idea

  1. 1. Stone Creek You are welcomewww.rossvillechurch.com781 Salem Road, Rossville, GA 30741 April 7, 2013 1
  2. 2. 2 Samuel 7 1 And it came topass, when the king sat in hishouse, and the LORD hadgiven him rest round aboutfrom all his enemies;Matthew 11 (Jesus said)28 Come unto Me, all ye thatlabor and are heavy laden, andI will give you rest. 2
  3. 3. Too often we are blamingthe Lord for our overloaded lives, when we have kept piling on what He did not require. Accept help, even when it’s not up to your standards. 3
  4. 4. Matthew 11:29 Take My yokeupon you, and learn of Me;for I am meek and lowly inheart: and ye shall find restunto your souls. 30 For My Martha cookingyoke is easy, and My burden Mary sittingis light. Most of us would think of Martha as the better person, but Jesus said that Mary had chosen the better part. 4
  5. 5. 1 John 5 2-3 By this we know that we love thechildren of God, when we love God, and keep HisCommandments. For this is the love of God, thatwe keep His Commandments: and His Command-ments are not grievous. When we do all that God has for us to do, But only what God has for us to do, We will find rest for our souls. 5
  6. 6. 2 That the king said unto Nathan the prophet, Seenow, I dwell in an house of cedar, but the Ark ofGod dwelleth within curtains (a tent). 3 And Nathansaid to the king, Go, do all that is in thine heart; forthe LORD is with thee.We will see that Nathan was not speaking here as a prophet, because he spoke not God’s Will.King David wanted to do a good thing, and a good man gave his approval. Yet it was not God’s Plan. 6
  7. 7. 4 And it came to pass thatnight, that the Word of theLORD came unto Nathan, saying, 5 Go and tell myservant David, Thus saiththe LORD, Shalt thou buildMe an house for Me todwell in?David was wanting to take on a task that God had not told him to do and did not want. 7
  8. 8. 6 Whereas I have not dwelt in any house since thetime that I brought up the children of Israel out ofEgypt, even to this day, but have walked in a tentand in a tabernacle. 7 In all the places wherein Ihave walked with all the children of Israel spake I aWord with any of the tribes of Israel, whom Icommanded to feed my people Israel, saying, Whybuild ye not me an house of cedar?God said, “Did I ever ask anyone to build me a house of cedar?” 8
  9. 9. God is saying, “If I hadwanted a house, I would have told you to build it.” A good idea is not a good idea, unless it comes from God. We sometimes find ourselves overwhelmed because we overload our own wagons. 9
  10. 10. 8 Now therefore so shalt thou say unto my servantDavid, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I took thee fromthe sheepcote, from following the sheep, to be rulerover My people, over Israel: 9 And I was with theewhithersoever thou wentest, and have cut off all thineenemies out of thy sight, and have made thee a greatname, like unto the name of the great men that are inthe earth. God said, “I have raised you up to be king of My people; I have cut off your enemies.”“I have established your name as a great man in the earth.” 10
  11. 11. 10 Moreover I will appoint a place for My peopleIsrael, and will plant them, that they may dwell in aplace of their own, and move no more; neither shallthe children of wickedness afflict them any more,as beforetime, 11 And as since the time that Icommanded judges to be over My people Israel, and have caused thee to rest from all thine enemies. Also the LORD telleth thee that He will make theean house. History teaches us clearly that this has not been fulfilled yet -- 3000 years later. Israel was scattered because of their sin. 11
  12. 12. Israel was enslaved time and again after the reigns of David and Solomon. 12
  13. 13. Israel’s enemies have risen up and afflicted themalmost continuously since the time after David’s son Solomon ruled the nation. Enemies of Israel are in brown. 13
  14. 14. 12 And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shaltsleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed afterthee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and Iwill establish His Kingdom. 13 He shall build anhouse for My Name, and I will stablish the throneof His Kingdom forever. This is speaking naturally of Solomon, who would build the temple of God.And it is speaking spiritually of Jesus Christ, Whowould come to earth, born of the lineage of David,And will rule not only Israel, but the whole world. 14
  15. 15. 14 Iwill be his Father, and he shall be My son. If hecommit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod ofmen, and with the stripes of the children of men:15 But My Mercy shall not depart away fromhim, as I took it from Saul, whom I put awaybefore thee. Solomon does sin, and he is chastened, and he does repent in the Mercy of God. Read the Book of Ecclesiastes. 15
  16. 16. 16 And thine house and thy kingdom shall beestablished forever before thee: thy throne shall beestablished forever. The Bible teaches us that other kings sat on the throne of Israel, and lead Israel astray. They were taken into slavery, scattered over the earth, and suffered unbelievable persecution. But God’s Promises are not void! They will be fulfilled. 16
  17. 17. God loved David; David was aman after God’s Own Heart. But even such a man needed to hear from God before he took action. 17
  18. 18. We must be careful not to go off on our own pursuits in trying to serve our Lord. A good idea is not a good idea, unless it comes from God. 18
