  2. 2. David Saul JonathanTest of Sauls intentions toward David.September 2, 2012 2
  3. 3. 1 Samuel 20:18 Then Jonathan said to David, Tomorrowis the new moon (feast): and thou shalt be missed, because thy seat will be empty. 19 And when thouhast stayed three days, then thou shalt go downquickly, and come to the place where thou didsthide thyself when the business was in hand, andshalt remain by the stone Ezel. 3
  4. 4. 20 And I will shoot three arrowson the side thereof, as though Ishot at a mark. 21 And, behold, Iwill send a lad, saying, Go, findout the arrows. If I expressly sayunto the lad, Behold, the arrowsare on this side of thee, takethem; then come thou: for thereis peace to thee, and no hurt; asthe Lord liveth. 4
  5. 5. 22 But if I say thus unto theyoung man, Behold, thearrows are beyond thee; gothy way: for the Lord hathsent thee away. 23 And astouching the matter whichthou and I have spoken of,behold, the Lord be betweenthee and me forever. 5
  6. 6. 24 So David hid himself in thefield: and when the new moonwas come, the king sat him downto eat meat. 25 And the king satupon his seat, as at other times, even upon a seat by the wall: andJonathan arose, and Abner sat bySauls side, and Davids placewas empty. 6
  7. 7. 26 Nevertheless Saul spake not anything that day:for he thought, Something hath befallen him, he isnot clean; surely he is not clean. 27 And it came topass on the morrow, which was the second day ofthe month, that Davids place was empty: and Saulsaid unto Jonathan his son, Wherefore cometh notthe son of Jesse to meat, neither yesterday, nortoday? 7
  8. 8. 28 And Jonathan answered Saul, David earnestlyasked leave of me to go to Bethlehem: Bethlehem 8
  9. 9. 29 And David said, Let me go, I pray thee; for ourfamily hath a sacrifice in the city; and my brother,he hath commanded me to be there: and now, if Ihave found favor in thine eyes, let me get away, Ipray thee, and see my brethren. Therefore hecometh not unto the kings table. 9
  10. 10. 30 Then Sauls anger waskindled against Jonathan, andhe said unto him, Thou son ofthe perverse rebellious woman(youre just like your mama.),do not I know that thou hast Saul knew thatchosen the son of Jesse to Jonathan wasthine own confusion (shame), willing for Davidand unto the confusion (shame) to become kingof thy mothers nakedness? instead of himself. To Saul that lack of ambition was shameful! 10
  11. 11. 31 Foras long as the son of Jesse liveth upon theground, thou shalt not be established, nor thykingdom. Wherefore now send and fetch him untome, for he shall surely die. Saul knew that God had chosen David to replace him as king of Israel. He was filled with jealousy and resentment. Saul wanted his family to be a dynasty in Israel throughout the generations. 11
  12. 12. It could have been so, if Saul had loved and obeyed the Word of the Lord God.1 Samuel 13 13 And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hastdone foolishly: thou hast not kept the Commandmentof the Lord thy God, which He commanded thee: fornow would the Lord have established thy kingdomupon Israel for ever. 14 But now thy kingdom shall notcontinue: the Lord hath sought him a man after HisOwn heart, and the Lord hath commanded him to becaptain over His people, because thou hast not keptthat which the Lord commanded thee. 12
  13. 13. 32 And Jonathan answeredSaul his father, and said untohim, Wherefore shall he beslain? what hath he done?33 And Saul cast a javelin athim (Jonathan) to smite Jonathan had nohim: whereby Jonathan ambition to be king.knew that it was determined He had submittedof his father to slay David. himself to Gods Will. 13
  14. 14. 34 So Jonathan arose from the table in fierce anger, and did eat no meat the second day of the month:for he was grieved for David, because his fatherhad done him shame. (treated David shamefully) Righteous anger is selfless anger. Its not all about me. Jonathan wasnt angry because Saul had thrown a javelin at him. He was angry for Davids sake. 14
  15. 15. 35 And it came to pass in the morning, that Jonathanwent out into the field at the time appointed withDavid, and a little lad with him. 36 And he said untohis lad, Run, find out now the arrows which Ishoot. And as the lad ran, Jonathan shot an arrowbeyond him. 15
  16. 16. 37 And when the lad was come to the place of thearrow which Jonathan had shot, Jonathan criedafter the lad, and said, Is not the arrow beyondthee? 38 And Jonathan cried after the lad, Makespeed, haste, stay not*. And Jonathans lad gatheredup the arrows, and came to his master. 39 But thelad knew not anything: only Jonathan and Davidknew the matter. He is really talking to David with these words. 16
  17. 17. 40 And Jonathan gave hisartillery unto his lad, and saidunto him, Go, carry them to thecity. 41 And as soon as the ladwas gone, David arose out of aplace toward the south, and fellon his face to the ground, andbowed himself three times: andthey kissed one another, and True humilitywept one with another, untilDavid exceeded. True friendship 17
  18. 18. 42 And Jonathan said to David,Go in peace, forasmuch as wehave sworn both of us in theName of the Lord, saying, TheLord be between me and thee, and between my seed and thyseed forever. And he arose anddeparted: and Jonathan wentinto the city. 18
  19. 19. This account of David and Jonathan shows us the meaning of true friendship and love. Selfless Without ambition Humble1 John 2 10 He that loveth his brother abideth in theLight, and there is none occasion of stumbling inhim. Genuine love removes the opportunity for sin. Loves fulfills all of the Law. 19
  20. 20. Philippians 2 (NIV) 3 Do nothing out of selfishambition or vain conceit, but in humility considerothers better than yourselves. 4 Each of you shouldlook not only to your own interests, but also to theinterests of others.Thats the kind of love David and Jonathan had onefor another, and it is the kind of relationships we need to build with one another. 20
