  1. 1. Stone Creek You are Welcome www.rossvillechurch.com781 Salem Road, Rossville, GA 30741 June 17, 2012 1
  2. 2. Israel is set up to fight a war with the Philistines. But they have a champion who defied Israel. 40 days - morning and evening. This day, David is on the battlefield. He was interested in fighting Goliath. Saul sent for him. 2
  3. 3. 33 And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to goagainst this Philistine to fight with him: for thou artbut a youth, and he a man of war from his youth. That was good logic, but is logic good? Human logic is the devils stronghold. That is where he plants all the wrong thoughts: Pride, lust, doubt, and fear. We must speak and hear and hearken to the Word of God. 3
  4. 4. 34 And David said unto Saul,Thy servant kept his fatherssheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb outof the flock: 35 And I went outafter him, and smote him, anddelivered it out of his mouth:and when he arose against me,I caught him by his beard, andsmote him, and slew him. 4
  5. 5. 36 Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: andthis uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one ofthem, seeing he hath defied the armies of the livingGod. 37 David said moreover, The Lord thatdelivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out ofthe paw of the bear, He will deliver me out of thehand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David,Go, and the Lord be with thee. 5
  6. 6. 38 And Saul armed David with his armor, and he put anhelmet of brass upon his head; also he armed him witha coat of mail. 39 And David girded his sword upon hisarmor, and he assayed to go; for he had not proved it.And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for Ihave not proved them. And David put them off him.(TLB) 38-39 Then Saul gave David his own armor -- abronze helmet and a coat of mail. David put it on,strapped the sword over it, and took a step or two tosee what it was like, for he had never worn such thingsbefore. "I can hardly move!" he exclaimed, and tookthem off again. 6
  7. 7. 40 And he took his staff inhis hand, and chose him fivesmooth stones out of thebrook, and put them in ashepherds bag which hehad, even in a scrip; and hissling was in his hand: andhe drew near to thePhilistine. 7
  8. 8. 41 And the Philistine came onand drew near unto David; andthe man that bare the shieldwent before him.Goliath had on full body armor, and even had a man carrying a shield before him. 8
  9. 9. 42 And when the Philistinelooked about, and sawDavid, he disdained him:for he was but a youth, andruddy, and of a faircountenance. 43 And the David didnt look likePhilistine said unto David, much of a warrior.Am I a dog, that thoucomest to me with staves? But God was with himAnd the Philistine cursed to fight for him.David by his gods. 9
  10. 10. 44 And the Philistine said to David, Come to me,and I will give thy flesh unto the fowls of the air,and to the beasts of the field. 45 Then said David tothe Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come tothee in the Name of the Lord of hosts, the God ofthe armies of Israel, Whom thou hast defied. Goliath thought he was defying an army of men, but it was much more than that.Dont challenge God; you will lose! 10
  11. 11. 46 This day will the Lord deliver thee into minehand; and I will smite thee, and take thine headfrom thee; and I will give the carcasses of the hostof the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air,and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earthmay know that there is a God in Israel. David was speaking in the Name of God Almighty, and moving in the Power of Gods Holy Spirit. 11
  12. 12. 47 And all this assembly shall know that the Lordsaveth not with sword and spear: for the battle isthe Lords, and He will give you into our hands. You know that God is fighting for you. You cant lose, and you cant fail. 12
  13. 13. 48 And it came to pass, whenthe Philistine arose, andcame and drew nigh to meetDavid, that David hasted, and ran toward the army tomeet the Philistine. Faith in God runseagerly to the battle. 13
  14. 14. 49 And David put his hand in hisbag, and took thence a stone, andslang it, and smote* the Philis-tine in his forehead, that thestone sunk into his forehead; andhe fell upon his face to the earth.50 So David prevailed* over thePhilistine with a sling and with astone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was nosword in the hand of David. 14
  15. 15. 51 Therefore David ran, andstood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, anddrew it out of the sheaththereof, and slew him, andcut off his head therewith. And when the Philistinessaw their champion wasdead, they fled. 15
  16. 16. 52 And the men of Israel and of Judah arose, andshouted, and pursued the Philistines, until thoucome to the valley, and to the gates of Ekron. Andthe wounded of the Philistines fell down by theway to Shaaraim, even unto Gath, and unto Ekron.53 And the children of Israel returned from chasingafter the Philistines, and they spoiled their tents. David defeated the devil in the Name of God. The Philistines are running in fear. 16
  17. 17. 54 And David took the headof the Philistine, andbrought it to Jerusalem; buthe put his armor in his tent. 17
  18. 18. 55-56 And when Saul saw David go forth against thePhilistine, he said unto Abner, the captain of the host,Abner, whose son is this youth? And Abner said, Asthy soul liveth, O king, I cannot tell. And the kingsaid, Enquire thou whose son the stripling is. David has grown a lot since last he was in the kings court; They may not recognize him. For sure, they want to know his family. 18
  19. 19. 57 And as David returned fromthe slaughter of the Philistine,Abner took him, and broughthim before Saul with the headof the Philistine in his hand.58 And Saul said to him,Whose son art thou, thouyoung man? And Davidanswered, I am the son of thyservant Jesse theBethlehemite. 19
  20. 20. Let not the strong man glory in his strength, nor thearmed man in his armor. God resists the proud, andpours contempt on those who defy Him and Hispeople. No one ever hardened his heart againstGod and prospered. Matthew Henry Concise Bible Commentary. Dont have the nerve to go against God. Have the courage to obey Him in all things. Live your life His Way. 20
