  1. 1. Stone Creek www.rossvillechurch.com 781 Salem Road, Rossville, GA 30741 12-26-2012
  2. 2. Sauls army has deserted down to 600 men, armed only with hoes, axes, and such. And the Philistines are encamped against them with a massive army -- 30,000 chariots, manyhorsemen, multitudinous foot soldiers -- all with the best weapons. Gods people are in a seemingly hopeless situation. 2
  3. 3. 1 Samuel 14 1 Now it cameto pass upon a day, thatJonathan the son of Saulsaid unto the young manthat bare his armor, Come, and let us go over to thePhilistines garrison, that ison the other side. But hetold not his father. 3
  4. 4. Jonathan is a grown man -- son of the king. What would have happened if he had told Saul what he was going to do?Saul would have commanded him not to go.The nation would have missed Gods blessing. Gods Best is not for the timid; Its only for those who, through faith, are strong and courageous. 4
  5. 5. 2 And Saul tarried in theuttermost part of Gibeah undera pomegranate tree which is inMigron: and the people thatwere with him were about sixhundred men; 3 And Ahiah, the If he needs toson of Ahitub, Ichabods make sacrifices, brother, the son of Phinehas, Saul has itthe son of Eli, the Lords priest covered.in Shiloh, wearing an ephod. He wont have toAnd the people knew not that wait on Samuel.Jonathan was gone. 5
  6. 6. Saul seems to have been quite at a loss, and unableto help himself. Those can never think themselvessafe who see themselves out of Gods protection. Now he sent for a priest and the ark. He hopes tomake up matters with the Almighty by a partialreformation, as many do whose hearts areunhumbled and unchanged. Matthew Henry Concise Bible Commentary. 6
  7. 7. This is the case of most backsliders:They would like Gods blessings, but are unwilling to humble themselves and fully repent. They live in fear, because they are notconfident that they are under Gods protection.James 4 7-8 Submit yourselves therefore to God.Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Drawnigh to God, and He will draw nigh to you. Cleanseyour hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, yedouble minded. 7
  8. 8. Just as Saul sent for another priest, because Samuel told him Gods Truth, And was expecting too much of Saul,Many backsliders will seek out a preacher who will tell them what they want to hear, And a church that will expect very little. Sauls son Jonathan is a better man than his daddy. 8
  9. 9. 4 And between the passages, bywhich Jonathan sought to goover unto the Philistinesgarrison, there was a sharp rockon the one side, and a sharprock on the other side: and thename of the one was Bozez, andthe name of the other Seneh.5 The forefront of the one wassituate northward over againstMichmash, and the othersouthward over against Gibeah. 9
  10. 10. 6 And Jonathan said to the young man that bare hisarmor, Come, and let us go over unto the garrisonof these uncircumcised: it may be that the Lord willwork for us: for there is no restraint to the Lord tosave by many or by few. 7 And his armor-bearersaid unto him, Do all that is in thine heart: turnthee; behold, I am with thee according to thy heart. produced by 10
  11. 11. There is no restraint to God to work through many or few. We are not depending on our own talent, wisdom, charisma, or any natural abilities. Is our only Source of any ability to have a church here, that doesThe Hand of God the Work of our Lord. 11
  12. 12. 8 Then said Jonathan, Behold, we will pass overunto these men, and we will discover ourselvesunto them. 9 If they say thus unto us, Tarry until wecome to you; then we will stand still in our place, and will not go up unto them. 10 But if they saythus, Come up unto us; then we will go up: for theLord hath delivered them into our hand: and thisshall be a sign unto us.Where is Jonathan getting these instructions? 12
  13. 13. 11 And both of them discoveredthemselves unto the garrison ofthe Philistines: and the Philistinessaid, Behold, the Hebrews comeforth out of the holes where theyhad hid themselves. 12 And themen of the garrison answeredJonathan and his armor-bearer,and said, Come up to us, and wewill shew you a thing. 13
  14. 14. 12b And Jonathan said untohis armor-bearer, Come upafter me: for the Lord hathdelivered them into thehand of Israel. Jonathan saw the potential of two men who are submitted to the Power of the Most High God. Has that changed? 14
  15. 15. Jonathan didnt wait to see what happened; He spoke the Word of Faith before he saw.To speak the Word of Faith, we must be living by faith. We live by faith as we willingly obeyevery Word of God. 15
  16. 16. 13 And Jonathan climbed up upon his hands andupon his feet, and his armor-bearer after him: andthey fell before Jonathan; and his armor-bearerslew after him. 14 And that first slaughter, whichJonathan and his armor-bearer made, was abouttwenty men, within as it were an half acre of land, which a yoke of oxen might plow. Two killed twenty in the first attack. In their own strength? 16
  17. 17. The enemy held every advantage. But Jonathan had his faith in the True and Living God. 17
  18. 18. How can we have access to such amazing Power? We can be 18
