Heart Disease: How to Fight Back <ul><li>Quit smoking. </li></ul><ul><li>Start a program of regular and vigorous exercise. </li></ul><ul><li>Lose weight. </li></ul><ul><li>Lower blood pressure. </li></ul><ul><li>Lower bad cholesterol. </li></ul><ul><li>Reduce fat in your diet – follow the food pyramid recommendations. </li></ul><ul><li>If diabetic – manage the disease strictly according to your doctors recommendations. </li></ul>4
  5. 5. Heart Disease: Exercise for Life <ul><li>Plan a realistic and attainable exercise program. </li></ul><ul><li>Start slow and gradually increase the level and intensity of the exercise. Measure progress in a journal. </li></ul><ul><li>Alternate aerobic (walking, running, biking) with weight and resistance (weights, machines) exercise. </li></ul><ul><li>When lifting weights build up gradually and use the “weight lifter” approach to avoid injury. </li></ul><ul><li>Stretch well and warm up before beginning any workout. </li></ul>5

Heart Disease: Exercise in our daily Lives <ul><li>At Home </li></ul><ul><li>Mow the grass. </li></ul><ul><li>Walk the dog. </li></ul><ul><li>When walking do so a faster pace. </li></ul><ul><li>Park farther away from store entrances. </li></ul><ul><li>At Work </li></ul><ul><li>Walk while discussing projects with co-workers. </li></ul><ul><li>Take the stairs instead of the elevator. </li></ul><ul><li>Utilize hotel fitness centers on business trips. </li></ul><ul><li>Walk around your building on breaks at work. </li></ul>6

This occurs at a point when we most need exercise to offset the increased risk factor of age. </li></ul><ul><li>Men are more likely (64%) than women (59%) to engage in regular physical activity. </li></ul><ul><li>Inactivity and poor diet are the major contributors to obesity, a risk factor for heart disease. </li></ul><ul><li>The above also contribute to decreased mobility making it harder to lose weight. </li></ul><ul><li>Exercise also helps control diabetes. </li></ul>7 7
