  4. 4. Terminology Refresh •VMWare: The company that produces „Virtualization‟ software… •Virtual Server: A fully functional server residing on a physical server hardware •File Server: Basically a computer that stores files for access by other computers. •Traditional Server Environment: Separate physical servers performing different functions. (File Server, Email Server, Web Server, Application…) •Enterprise IT: Term used to describe all of an organization‟s telecommunications networking services and equipment. (How your IT infrastructure is designed) 4/23/2009
  5. 5. Why are we considering alternatives? Consideration: Total Cost of Ownership •Hardware Costs: $1500 - $3500 per server •Software: OS, Application, Security •Personnel : $45,000 - $90,000/yr •Network /Communication •Maintenance Cost: Service Warranty •Disposal Cost Most servers and desktops resources today are utilized on an average of 8-15% of their total capacity, leaving most of the total resources unused. Since traditional servers are powered “on” 100% of the time, they consume 60-90% of the normal Workload power, even when idle. 4/23/2009

  7. 7. Why Virtual Server Space? Virtual Server Space: •allows clients to utilize traditional server capabilities without purchasing, provisioning and operating a server environment. •Clients may store and access business data stored on a virtual server from a high-speed internet connection… as if they are retrieving data from a traditional server •provides a solution to high capital cost server requirements at a fraction of the cost, while providing the power and technology needed to get the work done. All this with easily expandable resources as client‟s requirements grow. 4/23/2009
  8. 8. Benefits of A Virtual Server Space: Rental Solution Benefits: •Environmentally Healthy: Energy Efficient •NO capital cost hardware needed: ROI for hardware is distributed amongst other capital improvement needs… •No additional cost for peripheral hardware: DuBois hardware configuration provides security, connectivity, storage and „up-time‟. •No Hardware Administration: Routine maintenance is performed on our network, by our trained staff •YOU are in control: If you want to shutdown your server, you can! (IT helpdesk is available to turn it back on…) 4/23/2009
