  • How Google ranks websites and the basic needs for seo in 2013 and beyond. Not a pre-requisite, but suggested learning.Upcoming webinar series of internet marketing for florists.Answers the why before getting into the details. Why Google? It’s said they have as much as 85% market share.Speaking in broad generalities. And we’re going to pretend that social media doesn’t really exist for the most part. We’ll get to that later.Try to keep this down to 30 minutes
  • Also, watching the chat window for issues and helping out today, Brandon Kirkland from Epic Flowers partnerHe’s also promised to chime in if I say anything stupid or get too technical.
  • The definition seems to constantly be changing.SEOInternet marketingInbound marketing2012 - Content marketingAnd as on the slide a definition that I like.Quote from AJ Kahn of the blind 5 year old.Internet geek talk – describes the activity.Or what hasn’t changed – the result. Get found better in google. The purpose of this presentation is to eliminate internet industry talk and use easy to understand terms. From here on out, we’re going with “Get your website ranked better in Google”.
  • SEO is a small slice of power given to the people by the “Google Gods”.Google is a revenue driven organizationThe chink in google’s armour is that they still have to provide relevant organic results.Local florists in particular have an opportunity to develop their presence via internet marketing and seo in general. We’ll talk about this further.
  • Cluttered results, ads etc.Google has gone hyper local with it’s listings. You typically don’t want to rank for “florist” You want to rank for “yourtown florist”. Fake shops and all that other stuff.Who cares. You can only focus on what you can control.I like entities like FFC and others, but time spent there could be serving your business needs. That’s all I’ll say about that.
  • Image from Google on how search works. What exactly are they looking for in a website? Keywords, Quality and Authority.
  • Higher quality sites get ranked higher.Pagerank – quality indicator of a site based on the sites linking into it.Quality also means unique. They compare billions of pages to each otherThey are looking for any duplication and drop duplicates from the index.Terms are taken in context.
  • Higher quality sites get ranked higher.Pagerank – simplified, it’s quality indicator of a site based on the sites linking into it.Lots of high quality sites linking in.Few and or poor quality sites linking in.You have some control over this, but not really. High pagerank equals high quality in google’s eyes.

  • Relevancy, quantity and location of keywords. What is this document about. What are the sites linking into the document about? How often (within reason) is the keyword mentioned. not only on the page, but on the whole site itself.Location on the page.Is it a random term in the document.Placed in a heading.Title tag?URL All of the above?Google is a reader and determines what a site is about by READING
  • Keywords in action.Long tail vs. short tail keywords.3-5 or more search terms.Long tail are your target. They draw less traffic, but more focused quality traffic.RosesColored rosesColored roses winnipeg that’s your zone. Dragonfly ranks #2 for that.Dozen colored roses winnipegThis site targets canada, so google.ca, google.com will show different results.A website can rank for anything it wants to.
  • Keywords in action.-
  • Authority. Not highlighted greatly here. But very important for ranking the site. How many links, who links and why they link.

High pagerank equals high quality in google’s eyes.
  • Two paths. One leads to heartache and pain.Chasing rankings.Worrying about competitonEven worrying about seoOne leads to true enlightenment.Forget everything I’ve just told you.Move on to what’s actionable.Which is what this webinar series is about.
  • Drop the guru stuff and look at what you can do about it right now.
  • Nice images and sure there’s keywords here?Yea, but everyone has them. Remember that you’re trying to rank against millions of other sites that all say “roses” 16.7 times on their rose category page. But, my images are wonderful! That may be so… next slide.
  • Google doesn’t see your images. They’re looking for words and this is what they find.
  • Unique blog post text. Also higher up on the page. Location of the keywords higher up is a factor!
  • Pages about like things should be linked together.
  • If you already have a blog or news feed for your site. Great!Google’s guide to search engine optimization. Not a difficult read. Gets you a basic understanding without searching blogs which will lead you down that wrong path.Note: Cyber Monday and the Tuesday after were our best 2 sales days for all of November.
  • Quick tip.Posting content for community is great.Post for yourself first!
  • What do you want out of the internet? How much time can you spend on it?How much time are your competitors spending on it?
  • More questions? You can find me all over the place I’ll be happy to answer them.Email will be sent with slides and video. Also available on my blog in place of the registration post within 24 hours.- Content creation ideas will be posted on my blog. Please comment with your own ideas!
