  3. 3. JFK as President <ul><li>Kennedy’s program for the nation was the New Frontier </li></ul><ul><li>Kennedy created the Peace Corps which helped developing countries </li></ul><ul><li>Under Kennedy Congress created NASA (National Aeronautical Space Administration) </li></ul>

Bay of Pigs <ul><li>Kennedy allowed CIA to secretly plan an invasion of Cuba using Cuban refugees </li></ul><ul><li>The invasion occurred at the Bay of Pigs </li></ul><ul><li>CIA failed to provide air support and the refugees were quickly killed </li></ul><ul><li>Kennedy was harshly criticized for the attack </li></ul>

Berlin Wall <ul><li>Thousands of East Germans escaped from communism by fleeing to West Berlin </li></ul><ul><li>Soviets built the Berlin Wall to stop people from escaping </li></ul><ul><li>Kennedy show support for the Berliners by saying he was a Berliner also </li></ul><ul><li>The wall divided Berlin until 1989 </li></ul>

Cultural Revolution <ul><li>During 60’s and 70’ many young people protested against the war </li></ul><ul><li>Many young people revolted against everything their parents believed in </li></ul><ul><li>Young people became hippies </li></ul><ul><li>By the end of the 70’s most people gave up the hippie lifestyle </li></ul>

Working for Equal Rights <ul><li>Betty Freidan wrote about the need for equal rights for women </li></ul><ul><li>Started National Organization for Women (NOW) </li></ul><ul><li>NOW worked with Congress to pass laws that gave equal rights to women in jobs and education </li></ul><ul><li>1973 Roe v. Wade illegalized abortion </li></ul>

President Nixon <ul><li>Became President in 1969 </li></ul><ul><li>Improved relations with Soviets called Détente </li></ul><ul><li>1973 Nation faced an energy crisis caused by an oil shortage </li></ul><ul><li>Nixon faced impeachment over Watergate </li></ul><ul><li>Nixon planned to help local government with revenue sharing </li></ul>

President Ford and Carter <ul><li>After Nixon resigns Ford takes charge </li></ul><ul><li>Inflation and unemployment led to Ford losing to Carter in 1976 </li></ul><ul><li>Carter is faced with Stagflation ( when inflation and unemployment combine to make a slow or stagnant economy) </li></ul>
