  1. 1. The Nixon and Carter Administrations Objective: Analyze the presidency and domestic policies of Nixon and Carter
  2. 2. Nixon Domestic Policy <ul><li>Nixon planned to help local government with revenue sharing or the return of federal tax money to local governments </li></ul><ul><li>Nixon worked to expand police powers and wiretaps. He also orders the IRS to audit his enemies </li></ul>
  3. 3. Nixon Foreign Policy <ul><li>Nixon secretly sent Henry Kissinger to Communist China to establish better relations </li></ul><ul><li>Nixon would travel to the Soviet Union to improve relations himself </li></ul><ul><li>Nixon abandoned the Cold War policy of confrontation in favor of Détente or improved relations with Communist powers </li></ul>
  4. 4. Nixon Foreign Policy <ul><li>With improve relations the Soviet Union agrees to SALT (Strategic Arms Limitation Talks) and lays the groundwork for SALT II </li></ul><ul><li>Nixon used the Yom Kippur War as an opportunity to play peace maker in the Middle East </li></ul>

Watergate Crisis <ul><li>Nixon faced impeachment over Watergate </li></ul><ul><li>Watergate was the result of a massive campaign of political spying and sabotage conducted on behalf of President Nixon </li></ul><ul><li>John Dean advised Nixon to stop payments to burglars </li></ul><ul><li>After secret tapes exposed Nixon's involvement Nixon resigns and Ford takes charge </li></ul>

Ford as President <ul><li>Ford’s presidency was complicated by a series of issues </li></ul><ul><li>After Ford pardons Nixon over Watergate he becomes very unpopular </li></ul><ul><li>Stagflation- A combination of low productivity and high inflation </li></ul><ul><li>Energy Crisis created by OPEC’s embargo of oil imposed on the U.S. </li></ul>

Carter as President <ul><li>Despite Ford’s best efforts he was replaced by Carter as president in 1976 </li></ul><ul><li>Carter tries to combat Stagflation and is hit with another energy crisis as OPEC raises prices </li></ul><ul><li>Despite Carter’s best efforts the economy continues to suffer </li></ul>
  8. 8. Carter’s Foreign Policy <ul><li>Carter consider himself a champion of human rights </li></ul><ul><li>As a reaction to Soviet invasion of Afghanistan he stopped shipments of wheat to U.S.S.R. </li></ul><ul><li>Also boycotted the Olympics in Moscow </li></ul>
