The History of Hawaii <ul><li>Kamehameha III (February 1758 – 8 May 1819) was the last king of the Hawaiian Islands. </li></ul><ul><li>Hawaii was first allied with the US before becoming a territory, and later a state </li></ul><ul><li>Hawaii is our 50 th State </li></ul><ul><li>The attack on Pearl Harbor was actually before Hawaii’s statehood, but after becoming a territory </li></ul>

Dates to remember <ul><li>1820 – New England missionaries begin to “westernize” the island </li></ul><ul><li>1840 – Hawaii is recognized as an independent nation </li></ul><ul><li>1875 – Hawaii is placed under US protection </li></ul><ul><li>1887 – Pearl Harbor is built </li></ul><ul><li>1893 – Hawaii is established as a republic nation </li></ul><ul><li>1900 – Hawaii becomes a US territory </li></ul><ul><li>December 7, 1941 – Pearl Harbor is bombed </li></ul><ul><li>August 21, 1959 – Hawaii becomes the 50 th state </li></ul><ul><li>November 10, 2008 – State Quarter is released in a special ceremony. </li></ul>
