Sociological social psychology in action

  1. 1. Sociological Social Psychology in Action By: Diana Salas
  2. 2. Emotion Work This photo is a good demonstration of emotion work in the fashion industry. Here we see hundreds of young models who are at casting. These models, and literally all the other models in the fashion industry, must go to many model castings a day. They face countless rejections, countless people that tell them they aren’t what they are looking for, many times a day but still they smile. This is emotion work at play because these women have to manipulate their emotions, and their affect, to be able to continue to go to these model castings and to be able to smile through the rejections. They do this so that they can continue to go on more castings and continue to try and realize their dreams as models in the fashion industry.
  3. 3. Framing This is also a good example of framing. As stated previously, these women must face rejection countless times a day from many different people. These people reject them for reasons most people would believe to be incredibly personal. They are rejected on the basis of their weight, their height, their face structure etc. These women must put this into a different frame in order for them to not take these criticisms to heart and continue to go to more castings. They must tell themselves that themselves that this is “just their job” and that this is “something they must do in order to work”. They must change the frame of rejection in order for them to continue working in this industry.
  4. 4. Feeling Rules The picture seen here is a great example of society’s norms and the feeling rules that are put in place. President Obama took a picture with the Danish prime minister and Britain’s prime minister at Mandela’s funeral. They are visibly smiling in the picture and do not look as if they are mourning. Michelle Obama on the other hand does not look pleased, and many people judged and criticized the President for doing this. The reasons why he was criticized and judged was because in our society smiling and being happy and laughing at a funeral is not something one should do. At a funeral, we are expected to be sad even if we aren’t actually sad. In this situation, President Obama should have looked as if he was in mourning, or even just looked sullen because of the situation he was in because that’s what feeling rules tells us is acceptable in that situation.
  5. 5. Face Work/Saving Face/Honor Killing Honor Killings are ways that family’s use to save face. In other words, they kill their family members, most cases see that they kill their daughters, in order to save face, in order to maintain the families positive image/face. In the case see here, a woman who was 25 years old had married a man whom she loved but whom her family had not approved of. For this reason, her father, and other relatives stoned her to death in front of the courthouse. They excused their crime stating that it was something that must have be done because she had disgraced their family, she had threatened their face in their society. So, for them to rectify what she had done they said that they had to kill her. There are many cases of these “honor killings” that can be seen all around the world and they are always for the sole cause of saving face.
  6. 6. Speed Culture This picture of a woman multitasking, doing her work and being on the phone and being on her cell phone, is a great example of how speed culture is very present in our lives. People feel the need to constantly be updated regardless of what they are doing. They must always know what’s going on or else they will get an overwhelming feeling of being slow or being left behind. This is a very serious problem because people in this speed culture of ours literally are missing out on a lot of important things and aspects of life. Society is constantly moving and giving us new information and it just is incredibly hard to keep up and always be on top of things while at the same time more information is thrown at us.
  7. 7. Smell, Odor, Somatic Work This commercial for Febreeze products is a great example of somatic work. The main point to take away from this video is the fact that Febreeze is promoting this product not so that you can feel comfortable in your car but so you can make your car not smell like dog anymore so that your passengers won’t feel uncomfortable. Smell and odor are very important in our society and we judge things/people based on not only the way they look but also the way they smell. If something smells bad we attribute bad feelings to it as well as negative connotations. Smelling good or giving off a good smell to others is important in this society because it tells others that you’re “good” and not “bad”.
  8. 8. Identity Dissonance & Identity Negotiation This image on the right is a great example of identity dissonance as well as identity negotiation. It is a very well known fact that the catholic church is completely against abortion and is not pro choice at all. Abortion is considered a deadly sin in the catholic church and Catholics should in no way support this idea. So, naturally, being a catholic and being pro choice would bring about some dissonance with a person’s identity. This is where identity negotiation comes into play. Someone who is catholic and pro choice can figure out a way to not only be catholic but be someone who is a catholic who is pro choice. They basically mold a new identity for themselves instead of having two separate identities.
  9. 9. Social Stigma In our society there are many social stigmas that are present. One of the social stigmas that is alive and well is the stigma put on Muslim women because of their hijab. Hijab is the headdress that Muslim women wear. Women around the world look down on these women and say that they are being oppressed and don’t consider them to be standing up for their rights etc. The truth is that the hijab does not mean oppression it means so much more than that to a Muslim woman but it is stigmatized because of the Muslim religion. The comic to the right does a great job of showing how the Muslim religion and hijabs are stigmatized while a nun who is also covered from head to toe is not. This is because being a Christian nun is not stigmatized in our society.
  10. 10. Dealing with Stigma When individuals are socially stigmatized, like Muslim individuals are because of the way they dress or the way they look simply because they are Muslim, there are different ways these individuals will go about dealing with a situation where they are being stigmatized for their religion etc. One of the ways they will deal with it is by the concept of ‘Passing’. The basis of this concept is to not look Muslim. An individual will wear clothes that is seemingly ‘American’ and will speak English and will not draw attention to their ethnicity. They simply will try to avoid being stigmatized by trying to pass as American.
  11. 11. Presentation of Self Presentation of self is kind of self explanatory, it is literally the way we present ourselves to others. The main point of the presentation of self though is that we present ourselves to others in a way that will ensure that we look good to them, or in a way that will make ourselves look good. We will not reveal unlikeable qualities about ourselves but instead we will only reveal qualities about ourselves that will give off a positive feeling. In our society today social media is really big and most of us are involved in some for of social media; Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc. On these social media platforms people are given the ability to present themselves to others in a positive way and in a way that will make them look good. People might lie about their weight, height, or just about their life in general to make themselves look good online. The internet really gives people the freedom to present themselves to others in a way that might not really be true.
  12. 12. Shaming Shaming is an incredibly large part of our society and it is definitely a problem. People are shamed for all sorts of things such as their weight, their life style, their sexual activities etc. It is constantly occurring all around us all of the time. One of the kinds of shaming I constantly see is slut shaming and the saddest part is that the people whom I see slut shaming other girls most of the time are girls themselves. It is truly sad to see girls slut shaming other girls for the choices they make. Another form of shaming that I constantly see is body shaming. It happens all of the time and we see it in the media as much as we see it in everyday life. People are constantly criticized by the way they look whether it be fat shaming or skinny shaming. All in all, shaming in these forms is not okay and it is definitely a problem in our society which needs to be addressed.
  13. 13. Islands of Meanings / Symbols Symbols are a vital part of everyone’s lives and of society. Different cultures and different people assign different meanings to a variety of symbols. Symbols in religion can carry great meaning, such as the cross which can show other people that you are religious. Symbols in the gay community can carry great meaning, such as the rainbow flag which show people that you support gay rights. We live our lives through symbols and the meanings we assign to them. Symbols can bring a group of people together and they can also separate one group from another group. Symbols are powerful tools that we as a society have created. Object themselves do not have much meaning until we assign a specific meaning to them. If symbols did not exist we would have a hard time organizing ourselves and our thoughts and things we simply be meaningless so symbols are vital to society, vital to cultures, vital to human beings as a whole. We simply cannot live without symbols.
