  2. 2. Today I want to talk about the power of the internet. I use the internet exclusively to run my business and I find it very useful and easy to use. However, I have found over the last couple of months that some people are not interested in the internet and how it can help their business. Now that’s ok and I am not here to force anybody to undertake anything that they don’t want to do. But I think that it is important to enlighten people about the potential of social networking, and how it can help their business and help to stay in contact with people.<br />
  3. 3. Social networking is a way of meeting people and staying in contact with them across the internet. I currently use social networking as the backbone of my business. Sights such as Facebook and Twitter are good examples of social networking sights. They are easy to use and allow people to stay in contact with each other all over the world. <br />
  4. 4. Some people I have talked to have expressed to me their dislike for such sites. Again I state that that is their prerogative. However, I feel that these people are missing out on so much. Facebook, which now has close to 250 million users is one of the best ways to stay in contact with people. You can write messages, share photo’s and link them to other sites if you like. <br />
  5. 5. I currently have my own Facebook page and I am in contact with people that I haven’t seen since school, friends from uni and a cousin living in Townsville. Without Facebook I would not be talking to these people at all, but now I can catch up and share photo’s and feel part of their lives again.<br />
  6. 6. From a business point of view it is fantastic. I can promote my products Facebook and push people through to my web page and try to entice them to buy my products. The same can be said for all aspects of social networks. On the internet to undertake marketing, you need to go where the people are. You go to them and encourage them back, and Facebook is where they all are. <br />
  7. 7. The reason I will argue for people to use Facebook or other social networking sight is because in business you have to do what your customer wants. If they want to have all the new flash things then you need to give them that. If your target market wants old and refined then that’s what you provide. In today’s world, we need to stay up to date with online marketing. It has the potential to bring in hundreds of thousands of people to our web site, shop, event or town. It cannot be ignored. <br />
  8. 8. You can of course ignore if you want. You can say no to the new technology, but it will only have a detrimental fact on your business. Look at the Encyclopaedia Britannia, they ignored technology and were virtually whipped out over night when Windows bough out their own encyclopaedia on CD. They assumed people would prefer books, not a CD that could download up-to-date information from the internet. <br />
  9. 9. We all use new technology every day. Most people have a computer. Don’t let it go to waste just because you don’t like something. To give an example of how much I rely on it, I use Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, a host of video hosting sites, Blogs, bookmarking sights, article networking, forums, classified sites and answer sites. When worked together I can promote myself to hundreds of thousands of people all over the world. <br />
