  3. 3. Types of Roads<br />The different kinds of roads in India are: <br />Express ways – 4/6/8 lanes<br />National Highways -- 2/4 lanes<br />State Highways <br />District Roads<br />Rural and Other roads<br />
  4. 4. NHAI<br />National Highway Authority of India<br />Autonomous agency under Govt of India<br />Takes care of National Highways and Expressways<br />

  7. 7. Projects under NHAI<br />Consists of 7 Phases with 1.2 Trillion USD. <br />Golden Quadrilateral – Connecting all 5 metro cities<br />NS/EW Corridors – Jammu to Kanyakumari and Porbandar to Silchar and connecting important cities<br />

  9. 9. Why so much money??? <br />These are national highways. <br />
  10. 10. But…. <br /><ul><li>Why such poor road conditions?
  11. 11. Who will take care of these?
  12. 12. What does this poor road condition lead to? </li></li></ul><li>Serious effects of such roads... <br />
  13. 13. You must know<br />India has only 1% of road vehicles <br />but 8% of world fatalities (around 95000 people) second only to china. <br />
  14. 14. What is the Government doing?????<br />Higher Officials<br />

  16. 16. And also… <br /><ul><li> Lack of skilled labour and workers halting the progress/slow progress in important areas of road constructions.
  17. 17. There are lot of Land acquision problems in many areas, leading to slow progress in works, causing frequent accidents
  18. 18. Tax and bribes are common between state borders and the construction authorities
  19. 19. Eg: Indian Lorry drivers pay around $5 billion as bribes annually.</li></li></ul><li>What must be done??? <br />All the roads should be either adopted by NHAI or should be allocated funds for regular and proper maintenance. <br />Strict rules must be enforced by NHAI on all State Roadways Department asking proof for each and every money spent. <br />

Contd…. <br />Strict rules must be enforced on government officials also and each State and District Roadways must be made a Corporation. <br />They must be under the direct control of Ministry of Roadways. <br />The quality of the Roads built anywhere must be improved and if possible BOT must be used in important NHs and SHs. <br />
