1. 1. A Faith-Based Approach for Elimination of Health Disparities In Families

Sheila P. Davis, PhD, RN, FAAN*

Professor of Nursing

Assistant Dean of Doctoral Studies

The University of Mississippi Medical Center

Deputy Director of Mississippi Institute for Improvement of Geographic Minority Health

*November 2007 Inductee as Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing

Funded by grant: CPIMP061018-02 Department of Health and Human Services

Office of Minority Health

 2. 2. Health Disparities

Definition:

Health disparities are differences in the incidence, prevalence, mortality, and burden of diseases and other adverse health conditions that exist among specific population groups in the United States (NIH, 1999) “ A population is a health disparity population if.there is a significant disparity in the overall rate of disease incidence, prevalence, morbidity, mortality or survival rates in the population as compared to the health status of the general population. ” Minority Health and Health Disparities Research and Education Act United States Public Law 106-525 (2000), p. 2498
 3. 3. Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities

African Americans (AA), American Indian, and Puerto Rican infants have higher death rates than white infants.

AA women are more than twice as likely to die of cervical cancer than are white women (WM) and are more likely to die of breast cancer than are women of any other racial or ethnic group

Heart disease and stroke are the leading causes of death for all racial and ethnic groups in the U.S.

American Indians and Alaska Natives were 2.6 times more likely to have diagnosed diabetes compared with non-Hispanic whites. African Americans were 2.0 times more likely, and Hispanics 1.9 times more likely

 4. 4. More Racial and Ethnic Disparities

Although AA and Hispanics represented less than 30 percent of the population, they account for 66 percent of the adult AIDS cases, and 83 percent of pediatric AIDS cases reported.

Hispanics and AA aged 65 and older were less likely than Non-Hispanic whites to report having received influenza and pneumococcal vaccines.

 5. 5. Mississippi Disparity for Cardiovascular Mortality Per 100,000 Black MS White MS Blacks US White US Rate Total Population 743 595 596 460 Rate for Males 894 719 716 571 Rates for Females 633 495 509 374
 6. 6. Health Related Facts About Mississippi United Health Foundation http://www.unitedhealthfoundation.org/AHR2006/states/Mississippi.htm1

Since 1990, the prevalence of obesity increased from 15.0 percent to 30.7 percent of the population.

Since 1990, the prevalence of smoking declined form 31.1 percent to 23.6 percent of the population

High infant mortality rate

10.1 deaths per 1,000 live births

High premature death rate

10,889 years of potential life lost before age 75 per 100,000 population

 7. 7. A Faith-based Approach to Eliminate Health Disparities

John 10:10

The thief cometh not, but to steal, and to kill and to destroy; I am come that they might have life and that they might have it more abundantly.

 8. 8. Eight Faith-based Principles Toward Elimination of Health Disparities

1. N

2. E

3. W

4. S

5. T

6. A

7. R

8. T

 9. 9. God’s Desire is For Us To Be Well

3 John 1:2

Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thou soul prospers.

 10. 10. Principle One Nutrition

Genesis 1:29

And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.

 11. 11. Nutrition

Two categories of animals

Genesis 7:1,2

And the Lord said unto Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation.

Of every clean beast thou shalt take to thee by sevens, the male and his female and of beasts that are not clean by two, the male and the female

 14. 14. The Mediterranean Diet http://www.faqs.org/nutrition/Foo-Hea/Greeks-and-Middle-Easterners-Diet-of.htm1

Observations made in the 1960s of low incidences of chronic disease and high life expectancy rates of those who consumed the typical Mediterranean Diet

Lamb is the most widely eaten – no pork

Kosher beef, kosher poultry, and sardines

Some form of wheat or rice eaten with each meal

Fruits tend to be eaten as dessert

Potatoes and eggplants are most commonly consumed vegetable

Olive oil is the most frequently used oil in food preparation.

 18. 18. Principle Three Water

One can live for weeks without food but only days without water.

Water flushes out toxins out of vital organs, carries nutrients to cells, provides a moist environment for soft tissues, etc.

Need at least 8 glasses per day

John 4:10

“ Jesus answered and said unto her, if thou knowest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink thou wouldest have asked of him and he would have given thee living water.”

 26. 26. Rest

We need a weekly rest day to come aside from the cares of the world and have our souls restored.

You deserve and need a Sabbath rest every week

That’s why God gave you one. “The Sabbath was made for man and not man for the Sabbath .” Mark 2:27

 27. 27.
