2. 2.

Greek term carcinoma is the medical term for a malignant tumor derived from epithelial cells. It is Celsus who translated carcinos into the Latin cancer, also meaning crab. Galen used " oncos " to describe all tumours, the root for the modern word oncology.

Hippocrates described several kinds of cancers. He called benign tumours oncos, Greek for swelling, and malignant tumours carcinos, Greek for crab or crayfish. This name comes from the appearance of the cut surface of a solid malignant tumour, with the veins stretched on all sides

HISTORY
 3. 3.

Oldest description and surgical treatment of cancer was discovered in Egypt and dates back to approximately 1600 B.C.

Typical macroscopic appearance of cancer
 4. 4.

Cancer is development of abnormal cells which uncontrollably infiltrate and destroy normal body tissue.

Cancer can spread throughout the body.

Does not discriminate age, race, sex or age.

Group of many related diseases that begin in cells.

DEFINITION
 5. 5.

Sometimes cells become abnormal and keep dividing to form more cells without control or order.

Mass of excess tissue is called a tumor.

Tumors can be malignant (cancerous) or benign (noncancerous).

The cells in malignant tumors invade and damage nearby tissue and organs.

Travel through the bloodstream or lymphatic system to form new tumors in other parts of the body.

 6. 6.

The 4 most common cancers : Breast, Colon, Lung, and Prostate Cancer

Cancers of Blood and Lymphatic Systems :

Hodgkin's Disease

Leukemias

Lymphomas

Multiple Myeloma

Waldenström's Disease

SITES OF CANCER

 12. 12. STAGES OF CANCER

Describes the extent or severity of an individual cancer.

Knowing the stage of the disease helps in treatment and estimate prognosis.

TNM staging system is based on the extent of the tumor (T), spread to lymph nodes (N), and metastasis (spread to other parts of the body) (M).

Most cancers can be described as stage I - IV.

Physical exams, imaging procedures, laboratory tests, pathology reports.

 16. 16. The image of the normal colon tissue, at left, shows well-formed oval-shaped glands, evenly lined with a single, organized layer of cells indicated by arrows. The image of the cancerous colon tissue, in contrast, shows highly disorganized cancer cells stacked upon each other in an apparently random fashion.

 18. 18. CANCER PREVENTION

4 Steps to Reduce Risk

STEP 1 : Do not use tobacco - Smoking has been linked to several types of cancer, including: Bladder, Cervix, Esophagus, Kidney, Lip, Lung, Mouth, Pancreas, Throat, Voice box (larynx).
