12 Ways to Know you Are Headed for a Break-Up

 1. 1. Dr. Patty Ann Presents:
12 Ways to Know youAre Headed for a Break-Up
2. 2. 12 Ways to Know you Are Headed for a Break-Up
Spending NO Time Together
…or just interacting with each other when absolutely necessary.
Couples are well on their way to a break up when they stop spending time together just hanging out. This does not mean having different hobbies. It means taking separate vacations – all the time - and developing totally separate friends and social circles. Couples who use to go out together or with other couples and now avoid go out together like the plaque are well on their way to a break up or divorce.
3. 3. 12 Ways to Know you Are Headed for a Break-Up
Poor or No Communication
Couples who do not communicate with each other beyond the absolute necessary conversations which include: “pass the milk” are pretty much dead in the water.
Communication is the linchpin for all relationships and once it goes silent – so goes the relationship.
4. 4. 12 Ways to Know you Are Headed for a Break-Up
Lack of Emotion
Couples who no longer care enough about each other or the relationship show a lack of emotion toward disagreeable situations they may have once fought about. Emotions such as concern and even anger indicate the fact that you care about each other, and are passionate enough about an issue to fight for something. When you can no longer be bothered fighting for something you once felt passionate about within your relationship, your relationship is headed for a break up.
5. 5. 12 Ways to Know you Are Headed for a Break-Up
Everything Your Partner Says and/or Does is Just Plain Wrong - or Annoying!
Your relationship is at a point where every single thing your partner says or does is wrong, annoying you or just plain stupid. Instead of laughing at jokes that you used to think were funny – you now cringe at. There is nothing your partner can say or do that you approve of or you think is “right”. This is a sign that your relationship is on skid row and ready for a divorce or break up!
6. 6. 12 Ways to Know you Are Headed for a Break-Up
You or Your Partner Have TheirHead in the Sand
This is what I call “The Ostrich Syndrome” defined by one partner constantly bringing up an issue that the other partner absolutely refuses to acknowledge and/or address.
Therefore, the issue goes unresolved – creating a deeper and wider emotional chasm within the relationship. These relationships are doomed for a break up.
7. 7. 12 Ways to Know you Are Headed for a Break-Up
Constant Lip Service to Issues and/or Problems, but no Action is Ever Taken
Unlike "The Ostrich Syndrome", the partner acknowledges the issue(s) in the relationship and makes verbal promises upon promise to “work on” or “change” whatever the behavior, or lack of behavior might be that is driving you crazy. But that is all they do – promise you change but they do not take any real action. These couples initially limp towards a break up – but in the end, the break up sounds like a deafening roar!
8. 8. 12 Ways to Know you Are Headed for a Break-Up
To Paraphrase Rodney Dangerfield:You Get NO RESPECT
Healthy happy relationships require mutual respect of the partner’s for each other. Lack of respect is manifested when one partner consistently criticizes, humiliates, rejects, belittles and/or dismisses the other’s feelings and/or thoughts. When mutual respect dies, so too does the intimacy and respect needed for a healthy relationship - and a break up is inevitable.
9. 9. 12 Ways to Know you Are Headed for a Break-Up
You are No Longer a Team but Adversaries
If you relationship feels more like you are in competition with each other instead of being in a partnership with each other – your relationship is on the road to splits-ville and headed for a divorce. Competition implies a winner and a loser; in a healthy relationship – when one partner wins, the other partner benefits from the win as well.
10. 10. 12 Ways to Know you Are Headed for a Break-Up
Your Partner Spends Way Too Much Time on Social media Sites
…“re-connecting” with former girlfriends and/or spouses
If your partner spends more time talking on line with ex’s or new so-called “friends” of the opposite sex than they spend talking with you, your relationship is in the danger zone and headed for a break up.
11. 11. 12 Ways to Know you Are Headed for a Break-Up
Infidelity – You or Your PartnerHas Committed Adultery
This is a difficult, albeit not an insurmountable hurdle to overcome EXCEPT your partner wants to stay just “friends” with the person with whom they were unfaithful. This relationship is headed for a break up because your relationship will never be able to re-build the trust necessary to heal from the wounds caused by the infidelity.
12. 12. 12 Ways to Know you Are Headed for a Break-Up
Lack of Conflict Resolution Skills Rooted in the Inability – or Lack of Desire - to Compromise
The relationship is so irrevocably broken down that neither partner wants to compromise on anything. The issue(s) they are fighting over has become more important than the desire to keep the relationship together. Compromise is viewed as giving “up” something instead of being viewed by partners who are in a healthy relationship as giving “to” your relationship. This relationship is breaking up fast!
13. 13. 12 Ways to Know you Are Headed for a Break-Up
Refusal to Take Responsibility forthe Problems in the Relationship
Everything is always the other persons fault. Failure to acknowledge what you might be bringing to the difficulties in your relationship totally deadlocks the couples ability to work through conflicts and issues and reach a resolution. This deadlock creates a build up of resentment. Resentment is a sure fire sign that your relationship is headed for a break up or divorce.
