  3. 3. Scholarly? What? <ul><li>Time Magazine </li></ul><ul><li>Journal of Management </li></ul><ul><li>Wall Street Journal </li></ul><ul><li>Which of the above is a scholarly publication and what does that even mean? </li></ul>

Journal of Management <ul><li>Articles are based on a hypothesis (idea) that the author(s) will seek to prove or disprove through research. </li></ul><ul><li>Tests and research can be duplicated by others to prove its validity </li></ul><ul><li>Articles and their research are tested by other researchers before publication. </li></ul><ul><li>Not necessarily current events </li></ul>
  5. 5. Primary Source? <ul><li>A scholarly article is NOT a primary source. </li></ul><ul><li>A primary source is usually something like a newspaper or a magazine. It is an article that is essentially a first hand account of “what happened”. </li></ul>
  6. 6. Good Primary Sources <ul><li>New York Times - Newspaper </li></ul><ul><li>Wall Street Journal - Newspaper </li></ul><ul><li>Business Week - Magazine </li></ul><ul><li>The Economist – Magazine </li></ul>
  7. 7. Trade Publications? <ul><li>Trade as in Industry, not trading spaces. </li></ul><ul><li>Current topics and news that impact specific industries. These are not scholarly articles, they are like newspapers that only a person involved in the industry would care to read. </li></ul>

  9. 9. Find a Company… <ul><li>Pick a PUBLIC company – they have to provide information to the public. </li></ul><ul><li>Don’t have any names? Don’t know if it’s public or private? </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Do you have an industry in mind? </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Airlines? Coffee? Cars? Computers? </li></ul></ul></ul>
