  1. 1. A Career in the Geo-sciences . By Tyler Riggle
  2. 2. <ul><li>Study the physical aspects of the Earth. </li></ul><ul><li>Many help to search for resources such as metals, minerals, and petroleum. </li></ul><ul><li>Geoscientists usually work in one closely related field. </li></ul><ul><li>Ex. Geophysics, geology, hydrology, geochemistry, petrology, etc. </li></ul>
  3. 3. <ul><li>Master’s degree is the primary educational requirement, however a Bachelor’s degree is adequate. </li></ul><ul><li>A Ph.D. is necessary for most research, but not required. </li></ul><ul><li>Most states require geoscientist to obtain a license from a state licensing board. </li></ul>
  4. 4. <ul><li>Knowledge of the Global Positioning System (GPS) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). </li></ul><ul><li>Strong oral and written communication skills. </li></ul><ul><li>Must be able to work with a team well. </li></ul><ul><li>Requires foreign travel and knowledge of a second language. </li></ul><ul><li>Must be able to think logically and have the physical stamina while involved in fieldwork. </li></ul>
  5. 5. <ul><li>There is always enough jobs for this field. </li></ul><ul><li>Graduates with Master’s degrees or entry level Bachelor of Science have great opportunities. </li></ul><ul><li>Expected to grow faster than the average of all occupations </li></ul>
  6. 6. According to AAPG Salary Survey, A petroleum Geologist makes an average amount of $79,625.00 a year in the U.S. The Federal Govt. salary as of March 2009 is $94,085.00.
  7. 7. <ul><li>Foreign travel </li></ul><ul><li>Working with technology </li></ul><ul><li>Must be accurate in the field </li></ul><ul><li>Work both office, lab, and fieldwork. </li></ul><ul><li>Geologist sometimes have to work for long and irregular hours at a time. </li></ul>
