  2. 2. INTRODUCTION  Dr. Jennifer Creed has worked in veterinary services for two decades, focusing on the care and treatment of cats. In addition to providing overnight care for sick pets, Dr. Jennifer Creed has also performed various types of surgery, including bite wound treatment, ligament repair, and cystotomies. When a cat develops bladder stones, a cystotomy is a common way of improving the cat's overall well- being. This surgery is not necessary for all bladder stones, but those that create a complete urethral obstruction must be removed immediately.
  3. 3. CYSTOTOMY PROCEDURE IN CATS  When performing a cystotomy, the veterinarian first makes a small incision in the cat's belly and then another in the bladder, after which the stones are removed and analyzed. After the incision in the bladder is sutured, the abdomen is flushed and any urine which may have leaked into it is removed to reduce the risk of infection. The exterior incision is then closed up. Pet owners considering cystotomy as a solution to a cat's health issues should discuss the matter with a veterinarian.
