  1. 1. Heidi Lynn Emmerling Munoz, RDH, PhDEDUCATION: Ph.D. English Composition & Rhetoric, University of Nevada, Reno, 2004 M.A. English Writing Emphasis, University of Nevada, Reno, 1997 B.S. Health Arts, University of St. Francis, 1995 A.S. Dental Hygiene, Sacramento City College, 1986ACADEMIC HONORS University Fellowship 2000-2001 Meritorious Service Award 1995 Outstanding Student Award 1995 Outstanding Student of the Year 1986 Graduated With Great Distinction 1986DISSERTATIONPens and Probes: The Role Writing Plays in the Careers of Successful DentalHygienistsDirector: Dr. Stephen TchudiMy dissertation project, a qualitative case study, explores the role writing plays in thecareers of successful dental hygienists. Beginning with a review of the literature ofworkplace literacy and writing in the medical professions, my study then develops adescription of the realities of writing in the lives of the dental hygienist participants withgeneral themes of the range of audience, discourse, and process; education andclassroom practice; and awareness of writing‟s role in careers of dental hygienists.Following the presentation of the data, I review more research of writing across thecurriculum literature, writing in the genres, and writing in other disciplines as well assome specific teaching methodologies. My study concludes with my final observationson dental hygiene and writing; that composition and rhetoric scholars are in an idealposition to empower the writing, therefore success, of future dental hygienists and thatdental hygiene educators have many opportunities to incorporate writing into dentalhygiene curricula. In the recommendations, I present a new model course and anargument that composition and rhetoric offers a way to revise dental hygiene curriculasince composition and rhetoric specialists have an attitude toward learning ascomposing that can help create more independent and successful dental hygienists.PUBLICATIONSProfessional and Academic:Munoz, Heidi Emmerling.
