Brachial plexus

  1. 1. Learn the Brachial Plexus in Five Minutes or Less
  2. 2. The brachial plexus contains theneural connections between theneck and brachial nerves. This speedy method helpssimplify understanding thediagram of the brachial plexus.
  3. 3. Draw two headless arrows to theright.
  4. 4. Add a headless arrow to the left.
  5. 5. Add a “W “.
  6. 6. Add an “X”.
  7. 7. Add a “Y”. (Just a branch of the“Y” is added.)
  8. 8. Label C5 to T1.
  9. 9. Label the major branches:MC = musculocutaneous,M = median U = ulnarR = radial AX = auxiliary
  10. 10. This diagram includes the mainbranches and main nerve roots withthe proper connections.
  11. 11. More complex diagramming ofthe brachial plexus includes thefour “3s.”Neurosurgeons, neurologists, and physiatrists will use thisdiagram system.
  12. 12. The first “3” is the branches to C5,6, and 7 which form LTN = longthoracic nerve.
  13. 13. Next, each of the headless arrowshas three nerves attached to it. Tothe top headless arrow, add its “3.”
  14. 14. Label these “3”: DSN = dorsoscapularnerve; SS = suprascapular nerve;LP = lateral pectoral nerve.
  15. 15. Add the “3” to the middleheadless arrow.
  16. 16. Label the second headless arrow “3”:SS = subscapularTD = thoracodorsal nerve.
  17. 17. Add the final “3” on the bottomheadless arrow.
  18. 18. Label the last “3.” MP = medial pectoral,MBC = medial brachial cutaneous, and MABC =medial antebrachial cutaneous. Remember: the brachialcutaneous goes to the brachium or arm, and the MABC goes to theantebrachium or forearm. The nerve to the forearm starts distally.
  19. 19. Label roots, trunks, divisions, cords, terminal branches.
  20. 20. Radiologists, neurosurgeons andthoracic surgeons need to know thenerve to the subclavius (SUB).
  21. 21. The complete brachial plexusdiagram:
