  2. 2. Meaning of Panchakarma <ul><li>Literal meaning of Panchakarma is “Five Actions” </li></ul><ul><li>“ Panchakarma” is a Sanskrit Language word </li></ul>
  3. 3. Classification of Panchakarma <ul><li>Panchakarma is classified into two catagories </li></ul><ul><li>Classical Panchakarma </li></ul><ul><li>Keraliya Panchakarma </li></ul>

Classical Panchakarma <ul><li>This type of Panchakarma is widely discussed in Classical books i.e Charak Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, Bhav Prakash etc. </li></ul><ul><li>Classical means, “the original style of Panchakarma practices, as instructed in Classical Ayurveda Books, composed by Sages” </li></ul>
  5. 5. Keraliya Panchakarma <ul><li>This type of Panchakarma is popular in South India, Particularly in KERALA State </li></ul><ul><li>KERALA Panchakarma is comparatively differred to Ayurvedic Classical Panchakarma </li></ul>

Purpose of Panchakarma <ul><li>The main purpose of the Panchakarma, is to detoxify and purify the body </li></ul><ul><li>At a certain time, in during treatment, when Ayurvedicians observed that, prescribed treatment is not well & good responsing & medicinal effects are resisted </li></ul><ul><li>In this stage,body needs detoxification and purification, for proper functioning again </li></ul>
  7. 7. Certain rules <ul><li>Ayurvedicians framed certain rules and conditions for Panchakarma, which is to be followed by the Ayurveda practitioners </li></ul>
  8. 8. Poorva Karma <ul><li>Poorva karma means, preparations before the actual begining of Panchakarma </li></ul><ul><li>Poorva karmas are two: </li></ul><ul><li>Snehapaan </li></ul><ul><li>Swedan </li></ul>

Snehapaan: Oliation <ul><li>Snehpaan means Oleation / intake of fatty substances </li></ul><ul><li>Fatty substances are 1- Ghee 2-Oil 3-Animal fat 4- Bone marrow fat </li></ul><ul><li>Snehpaan should be done before the rising of Sun as early as in Morning once a day </li></ul><ul><li>Repeat the intake of fat for seven days as per directives </li></ul><ul><li>Those who are not willing to intake Fat in this way, they should take it with the food </li></ul>
  10. 10. Swedan: Sudation <ul><li>Swedan means “ Steam Bath/ Steaming of Body ” </li></ul><ul><li>Steaming is done with or without medicine </li></ul>
  11. 11. Panchakarma <ul><li>After Snehan and Swedan , Panchakarma is done </li></ul><ul><li>It have five functions to be done </li></ul><ul><li>Vamana </li></ul><ul><li>Virechana </li></ul><ul><li>Anuvasana </li></ul><ul><li>Niruhana </li></ul><ul><li>Navana </li></ul>

First Karma: Vamana <ul><li>Vamana means Vomitting </li></ul><ul><li>This act is indicative in winter season </li></ul><ul><li>Those who are having strong body built & suffering from Kaphha dosha, they should be selected for Vamana Karma </li></ul><ul><li>Avoids:Serious Ophthalmic disorders,Abdominal tumour,Very Old person, Pregnent women, Children,Alcohol addicts, Weak, Tubercular person,Heapatomegaly, splenic disorders, should not be selected </li></ul>

Second Karma: Virechana <ul><li>After Vaman Karma is finished, Virechana Karma is done </li></ul><ul><li>Several Medicines are used according to weather and dosha conditions </li></ul><ul><li>Doses of the medicines are fixed according to the strength of patient with special prescribed diets </li></ul><ul><li>Avoids: Children, Pregnent women, Old persons,weak & robust constitution, psycho-fears, Alcoholics etc as mentioned, should not be selected for this Karma </li></ul>

Third Karma :Anuvasana <ul><li>Known as Enima therapy, A Basti Yantra is used </li></ul><ul><li>For Anuvasana , Oil enema is given </li></ul><ul><li>Castor Oil or Medicated Oil is preferred , introduced thorugh anorectal, vaginal or urethral </li></ul><ul><li>Quantity of Oil is prescribed by Ayurvedicians acording to Dosha and complaints </li></ul>

Fourth Karma: Niruhana <ul><li>After Anuvasana Basti, Niruhana Basti is given </li></ul><ul><li>In Niruhana Basti, decoction of Herb is used, through Enema, similarly as is done in Anuvasana </li></ul><ul><li>In Anuvasana, enema of Castor oil or Medicated Oil, is used </li></ul><ul><li>In Niruhna, Herbal decoction enema is used </li></ul>
  16. 16. Fifth Karma: Nasya <ul><li>Medicated oil is used through Nasal Route </li></ul><ul><li>Til oil, Castor oil and other medicated Oil is preferred in Panchakarma </li></ul>
  17. 17. After Panchakarma <ul><li>Care should be taken, to follow rules of the maintenance of the health, as instructed in Ayurveda </li></ul>

South Indian style of Panchakarma <ul><li>In KERALA, Panchakarma is differ to classical style of Ayurveda </li></ul><ul><li>It have Five Karma: </li></ul><ul><li>Pindaswed </li></ul><ul><li>Picchil </li></ul><ul><li>Shirobasti </li></ul><ul><li>Shirodhara </li></ul><ul><li>Shirolepan </li></ul>

Precautions <ul><li>Classical AyurvedicPanchakarma is a very sophisticated mode of treatment </li></ul><ul><li>It needs a very skilled, experienced, tactful hand to perform all the Karma </li></ul><ul><li>Selection of patient for Classical Ayurvedic Panchakarma should be done very carefully </li></ul><ul><li>KERAL Panchakarma , however, have no risk factor </li></ul>
  20. 20. Avoids <ul><li>By Pass surgery patients </li></ul><ul><li>Pace-maker implanted patients </li></ul><ul><li>Kidney transplanted patients </li></ul><ul><li>Joints replacement patients </li></ul><ul><li>Others implanted patients i.e. Steel rod, Steel artificials etc </li></ul>
  21. 21. Take Panchakarma with care <ul><li>Ayurvedicians are always warned for selection of patient </li></ul><ul><li>Choose and select patient according to merit and demerits of the patient complaints </li></ul><ul><li>Some patients are not advised to take the Panchakarma treatment </li></ul>

Blending Treatment <ul><li>Any medicinal treatment requires expert hand physician </li></ul><ul><li>It is seen that if Ayurvedic treatment is blended with the part of Homoeopathy treatment, part of Yoga and nature cure treatment, part of Physiotherapy, part of Magnet therapy, part of Electrotherapy, part of Accupuncture and other forms of treatment, it cures faster and with ease </li></ul>
