Clinical trials are medical trials designed to test new treatments and medicines on real patients. Before treatments or medicines get to the clinical trial stage, they have already been thoroughly tested in a laboratory. Clinical Trials

Information
Gathering
The key aim of a clinical trial is to eva-
luate the effectiveness of the new me-
dicine or treatment. Doctors are looking
to see if the treatment is safe to use
and whether there are any side effects.
They are also evaluating whether this
new treatment works better than those
currently being used and if the patient’s
quality of life is affected.
A treatment or drug that goes to clinical
trial is not always going to be one that
enters general use. Certain treatments
will prove to be less effective than ones
already in use – or have more or har-
sher side effects – and will therefore be
discontinued. However, all information
gathered is useful, as researchers can
learn from negatives as well as positives
and this may eventually lead to a better
treatment being devised.
PARTICIPATION IN A CLINICAL TRIAL MAY BE OFFERED TO SOME
PATIENTS WITH HEAD AND NECK CANCERS.
