What we do:
● Procure and manage a virtual learning environment available to all school
boards in the province.
● Create course material for eLearning and blended learning courses that
reflect ministry goals and incorporates sound pedagogy.
● Create professional learning resources for educators and administrators.
● Provide technical and pedagogical support for school boards.
Early Attempts at Badging Initiatives
We’ve primarily used badges in our eLearning courses to:
● Communicate development of learning skills.
● Track student progress with regards to curriculum expectations.

Advantages of Badges From Our Perspective
● Clearly communicates progress.
● Promotes thinking about assessment and evaluation in a way that is more
in line with current ministry policy and goals.
● Motivational in that it serves to set clear expectations for students.
● Facilitates the non-linear delivery of course content, enabling inquiry
based learning.
Limitations of Our Current Approach
● Badges are used in isolation within individual courses.
● Courses writers and teachers who deliver the courses to students have
different approaches to the use of badges.
● Few of our courses currently use any kind of badge system.
Specific Advantages of Open Badges
● Meaningful and universally understood reporting of student progress.
● Portability of student progress.
● Tracking of certifications and participation in learning experiences for
Specialist High Skills Major programs.
● Emphasis on Learning Skills and Global Competencies.
● Crafting of individualized learning plans for credit recovery.
