Aerobic Exercise: Warm-up and Cool-down

Warm-up <ul><li>The warm-up is prior to the conditioning phase </li></ul><ul><ul><li>The conditioning phase is the aerobic activity </li></ul></ul><ul><li>The warm-up should last 5-10 min </li></ul><ul><ul><li>The warm-up should begin with ‘low to moderate’ intensity </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Or </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>The warm-up should be an activity that gradually increases in intensity </li></ul></ul><ul><li>A general rule </li></ul><ul><ul><li>The harder the conditioning phase and/or the older the exerciser the more extensive the warm-up </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>But the warm-up should not be so hard that it reduces performance during the conditioning phase </li></ul></ul></ul>

Warm-up <ul><li>Should stretching be part of the warm-up? </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Although there is much debate of whether stretching should be part of the warm-up, one thing is agreed upon: </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>You should NOT stretch before the warm-up </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>It probably does no harm to do some brief stretching at the end of the warm-up </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>But it could inhibit the conditioning phase’s level of intensity </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>If you want to include stretching during the warm-up </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>you should include dynamic stretching NOT static stretching </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><li>Next Slide: General Exercise Warm-Up Video </li></ul>
