  6. 6. A Little Detour…<br />Children do not need a cell phone because it is a small school; we can always locate your child.<br />Texting is the biggest problem. Get a cell phone with limited texting opportunities.<br />Research your plan for the special cell phones for kids. <br />If you do decide to give a child a cell phone…do not give it to a child as a reward. Give it to them as an emergency tool and reserve the right to look at the phone at any given time. <br />
  7. 7. More detour…<br />Children do not need a laptop<br />Fifth graders need a working desktop computer located in the living room or any other place where people frequently pass<br />Fifth graders need a working printer and possibly access to Internet with the enforced parental controls.<br />

Life Skills<br />Raise a Good Sport<br />Teach to fail<br />A certain amount of stress is okay, raise a resilient child by being positive and trying to find something good in every day<br />Do not interfere in child’s disputes! <br />Do not allow a child to whine and complain. Whining and complaining do not equate expressing one’s feelings. Teach “I feel that…” <br />

Life Skills<br />Teach Discipline<br />It is possible to discipline a child without love; it is not possible to love a child without discipline<br />Discipline=rules +consequences<br />Teach Manners<br />It is not just please and thank you<br />By teaching good manners you are saving your child from begin ridiculed by other students<br />
  10. 10. Life Skills<br />Teach Work Ethics<br />Practice delayed gratification<br />Homework: be careful with providing too much assistance; just make sure that it is completed<br />Celebrate achievement and push your child towards more challenging tasks<br />Model it<br />
