Does Social Media = Social Networking? • No. – Social Networks are groups of people sharing information, often to make decisions – Social media are ways of connecting and communicating with those networks • As a business owner, you need to develop a strategy for both – 1st the network, THEN the media

Useful Twitter Terms • Hashtag (#): indicates a topic under discussion, identifies a group – #QuickBytes is 3rd Thursday of the month, 12:30- 1:30p • Tweet: 140 character (max) message to the world, or at least your followers • Follow: User has chosen to receive a live feed of your Tweets (or vice versa)
  6. 6. Twitter Terms (cont’d) • @ me: Speak to me directly (in public) – Hey @DoktaDivah! Great job! #QuickBytes • DM me: Speak to me directly (via private message) – User must be following you in order to receive the message • ReTweet: Repeating someone else’s Tweet to comment on it or cosign
  7. 7. Last One! • FollowFriday (#FF): People list Tweeps (people) they suggest following based on that week’s tweets or other criteria • Fail Whale: Twitter is having technical problems or is overloaded, logging in will be a challenge
