To be a successful medical teacher

  1. 1. TO BE A SUCCESSFUL MEDICAL TEACHER? DR.T.V.RAO MD Many times I get a doubt whether I am doing justice to my duty as a Teacher. In the past when I was a student, I have nothing to complain, or any one to listen to our problems, I just listen to my teachers whether I like it or not, the matters to learn are simple we have lots of Time to concentrate on our studies, Today matters have changed beyond perception of many, there are no clear guidelines for any admissions to any specialty, anybody can become anything if one has money or other parameters which are beyond my thoughts. Neither we can predict the students and the circumstances you work in any Medical college, the quality of Medical education is a concern to the Nation one of the reasons the country to be strong, if the parameters of Medical education are strong. However we really do not know what students we get to guide or teach. However the question remains how to remain as teacher as we have no way but to survive in the same system everyone complains on students and administration. As Darwin’s theory works at every stage a bad teacher survives, bad students survive, never forget, we have to survive I as a teacher we should be broad minded and start opening the eyes to the world, with one simple idea “Learning is changing. And, we will see new models, new technologies and designs coming up. So, let’s drop the old thoughts and redefine the life as a Teacher – or at least give it a new and wider definition” In the changing world we cannot teach everything as curriculum is so vast, Soon you will realise “You can't teach people everything the student need to know. The best you can do is position them where they can find what they need to know when they need to know it, we make many mistakes in undergraduate teaching. As Undergraduates when they should know something of everything in MBBS, we teach many irrelevant matters which may not be useful to become competent physicians however never forget that you are not making them Microbiologists or Pathologists, or any other specialty like us. Yet I did not get the definition of optimal teaching, We are just like horse keepers as my Learned professor used to tell I am only horse keeper you are all like Horses, I can find a source for you to drink water rest is your duty whether you learn to drink or else you cannot live in this difficult profession. When I was at high school as student many efforts were put to some of friends and were spoon fed, some administrators wish that learners want to be spoon-fed, but then we won't let them hold the spoon. The people who were spoon-fed could not withstand the graduate studies and perished in the system. The much of the Criticism on teachers is lack of knowledge as there are no defined protocols to make an effective teacher, A great quote inspires and guided my life “For me, I am driven by two main philosophies: know more today about the world than I knew yesterday and lessen the suffering of others. You'd be surprised how far that gets you. (” Neil deGrasse Tyson). Many lessons I have learnt, great lesson as advised by one being is ― Albert Einstein’s the Wisdom is not a product of schooling but of the lifelong attempt to acquire it.” Whatever can be your philosophy the Medical and professional colleges have become marketing places for producing results and no body concentrates on the quality of the Doctors we produce, It is an open secret today if you cannot produce good results you will be branded as inefficient teacher may find your path for exit if not soon but little later. It is certain we can still survive with all odds with little principles and practice as everything good and bad is a cycle I wish all my friends to practice a little what defines to be good to be a Medical teacher as prescribed by General Medical council U K, The educational obligations of all doctors as all doctors have a professional obligation to
  2. 2. contribute to the education and training of other doctors, medical students and non-medical healthcare professionals on the team. Every doctor should be prepared to oversee the work of less experienced colleagues, and must make sure those students. Teaching skills are not necessarily innate, but can be learned. Those who accept special responsibilities for teaching should take steps to ensure that they develop and maintain the skills. We expect doctors to be honest and objective when assessing those they have supervised or trained. Patients may otherwise be put at risk. India like many developed and developing countries opting for changes in education as recent information prescribes to reduce the Time period of MBBS education period by one years and integrated all subjects from beginning of the course till the end, Changes in undergraduate education to be emphasized learner-centered education, problem solving and the acquisition of clinical and communication skills within hospital and community settings. For this reason, more hospital doctors and general practitioners are likely to be involved in teaching and the facilitation of learning, including the information of feedback about performance. Many universities conduct Medical educational programmes under Medical Council of India. Most of the Medical teachers become trainers by Accident if they join in a teaching Institute however wherever you are placed as Teaching skills are not necessarily be innate, but can be learned. Those who accept special responsibilities for teaching should take steps to ensure that they develop and maintain the skills’ do not blame all the time the studetns alone, teachers too are contributing to down fall of the Medical profession as many try to pretend as well learned people, we should set our house in order as teacher It seems obvious but a good teacher must be knowledgeable about and up-to-date on their subject area but doesn’t pretend to know it all. Do not be afraid or embarrassed to admit you don’t know the answer to a question- you could offer to find out the answer and get back to the student, or direct the student to where the answer may be found. I always question my role to be a successful man? Try to be a warm and open teacher who is approachable and understanding. Never make a student feel intimidated or ridiculed. Answer every question seriously. Best things I learnt try to be flexible in your teaching style to keep students interested. Be willing to change. Never forget we have many competent, highly intelligent Students in our classes who inspire us to do better. ANYBODY CAN BECOME A TEACHER, FEW ARE RECOGNIZED AS TEACHERS IT IS NOT LUCK, THE POSITION YOU OCCUPY, IT IS JUST PASSION TO IMPROVE THE SELF AND THE WORLD.
