Research Based Ideas for Doc Students: Motivation, Self
control, Procrastination, and Moving Ahead
2. Quotes… Today is all about moving on…
“Don’t let yesterday use up too much of today.” —
Cherokee Indian Proverb
“Do not worry if you feel low; the sun has a sinking spell
every night, but rises again all right the next morning.”
“Whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” – Proverb
“When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be.” —
Lao Tzu
“Goals give you more than a reason to get up in the
morning; they are an incentive to keep you going all
day.” — Harvey Mackay
3. Agenda for today, research on…

Perfectionism? Over commitment?
2. Self Control – the research
3. Habits – the research
4. PhD student behaviors – the research
5. What we can learn from Peter… (not
research)
4. Self Sabotage & Stress

2. The marshmallow test – would you pass?
3. Do you give your creativity a chance? – You need your right brain too
4. Do you fear being 110% engaged? Leads to procrastination
5. Perfectionism – NOT a + - dump it and move on

5. Self Control – the research
1. Stories of success ALWAYS come with stories of regular
habits of practice (and 50% fail 50% of the time)
2. DeWall (2013) tells us that what is known to psychology
breaks down into three ideas about self-control:
• it takes effort and we have a limited amount of energy
• it’s a skill and can be learned
• it’s a knowledge resource, therefore implying practice
makes perfect
3. Three different strategies might be considered as a way
to develop self-control:
• the promotion focus – pursuing a positive outcome
• the prevention focus – vigilance against mistakes
• the practical focus – stacking habits
6. Habits– the research
1. NOT 21 days – when they tracked that back it is false data
2. Depends on the context and the complexity.
3. Which are your keystone habits (Duhigg, 2012)
4. Determine for yourself (know thyself again)….
1. What are the complexities in your life that work against
your doctoral work?
2. What are the allies?
3. Give yourself a rating for how hard this will be and then
plan accordingly.

1. Project Manager
2. Wanderer
3. Hobbyist – (Lahenius & Martinsuo, 2011)
2. What adversity do you face/may you face?
1. What plans can you put in place to help you
face them?
3. Action, action, action…
4. Persistance… - if at first….
