First Step <ul><li>Turn on the computer & Monitor </li></ul><ul><li>Type in your password ,if you have one </li></ul><ul><li>Go to the “Start” “Programs”to see menu list of installed software, then select your “program“or file by clicking on it </li></ul><ul><li>Note: A Program is a set of instructions for the computer ,telling it to do something </li></ul>

Desktop Basics <ul><li>The desktop is a very helpful tool on your computer , it is the screen you see </li></ul><ul><li>The desktop holds many icons (programs) </li></ul><ul><li>These icons (programs) can be quickly accessed though the desktop by simply double clicking on it </li></ul><ul><li>The desktop also holds many background designs </li></ul>

Desktop Basics (cont.) <ul><li>Your desktop has a a computer Icon , it is call My Computer . </li></ul><ul><li>If your computer was a book full of information then this would be the cover of the book.If you double click it,it will open the book to the Table of Contents or directory, to go almost anywhere on your system. </li></ul><ul><li>Parts of the desktop include icons,files and folders.The main background screen on your computer where icons sit and which windows open on. </li></ul><ul><li>Windows Explorer allows you easy access to the files and folders on your computer. With Windows Explorer,you can look at,move,delete,and create files and folders with ease. </li></ul>

Windows basics <ul><li>The 3 main components are: </li></ul><ul><li>A: Floppy Disk Drive </li></ul><ul><li>C: Hard Drive </li></ul><ul><li>D: CD-Rom Drive </li></ul><ul><li>Programs and files-such as MSOffice and MSWorks </li></ul><ul><li>Menu Bar-the bar in an application that contains lists of options called menus that when selected contain a list of commands that perform different functions. </li></ul><ul><li>Large/Small icons-A small graphic on the desktop that represents a file or program </li></ul>

Students will identify and name: <ul><li>Computer Workstation Basic Components and Peripherals </li></ul><ul><li>Input and out put devices </li></ul><ul><li>Desktop, Opening Windows, Dialog Boxes and Menus, Taskbar and toolbars </li></ul><ul><li>Components of computers : CPU, memory, hard drive, cd-rom drive, floppy drive ,cables, power supply and motherboard </li></ul>

How to Save or Find Files Saving allows you to keep a file on your computer’s hard drive or floppy disk and return to it later. <ul><ul><ul><ul><li>You must do three things to save a file: </li></ul></ul></ul></ul><ul><li>Choose a location to save it ( desktop, A:, C:,my documents) </li></ul><ul><li>Name the file </li></ul><ul><li>Designate the file type </li></ul><ul><li>Then, Click file , a menu will appear the Click “Save” or “ Save As” </li></ul><ul><li>Find Files </li></ul><ul><li>To help you locate/find misplaced files,use the Find utility.Proved you know at least some part of the file name you are looking for,you can quickly search your entire hard drive to find it. </li></ul>
