1. 1. Chemistry of Gatorade!!! By: Andrew Kelm, Joseph McElligot, and Randall Cooper
 2. 2. Background Info…

In 1965, the Florida Gators (football team) had many players suffering from heat related sicknesses. As a result, the Gators coaching staff sat down with several university physicians to determine what the problem was. The doctors soon found out that the players were expending all of their fluids and electrolytes by sweating. The players needed to replenish themselves with carbohydrates they were losing. The medical staff came up with a carbohydrate- electrolyte rich solution and called it Gatorade. The new beverage was a huge success and the Gators started to win games. Today Gatorade is found on the sidelines of many collegiate and pro sports.

 3. 3. Ingredients

H 2 0…Water

C 6 H 12 O 6 …Glucose

C 12 H 22 O 11 …Sucrose

C 6 H 12 O 6 …Fructose

NaCl… Sodium Chloride

C 6 H 5 Na 3 O 7 …Sodium Citrate

C 3 H 4 OH(CO 2 H) 3 … Citric Acid

H 2 KO 4 P…Monopotassium Phosphate

 4. 4. How does Gatorade Work?

The 6% carbohydrate solution in Gatorade provides energy and helps athletes fight fatigue. This also makes Gatorade easier to absorb than water.

The electrolytes in Gatorade help replenish the body of what was lost through sweat by carrying an electrical charge to muscles and giving off energy. Electrolytes are key to staying hydrated.

 5. 5. Gatorade Formula =

O H OH H H

H 2 O ·Na·K·Cl·C-C-C-C-C-CH 2 OH

H OH H OH OH
